The Killers Conquer the Sun

by Mike Augusti, contributor

The Killers came, they saw their fans and they conquered the Mohegan Sun Arena last Thursday night with a bombastic sold out performance.

The lads from Las Vegas have one of the strongest most rabid fan bases in all of rawk music.  Although they are not touring for a new music release nor did their stage set change much from their last appearance at Mohegan, their fans came out in full force to cheer them on.

The show opened with lead singer Brandon Flowers sitting at a piano performing Enterlude with one spotlight shining on him.  The short lived beginning quickly turned in to the rawk show fans were expecting when the band kicked off the set with their hit The Way It Was.

This was a fast paced show with the band ripping through tunes early on like Change Your Mind, Spaceman and Smile Like You Mean It, which has always been a fan favorite.

A cool point in the show had the band starting the beginning of an acoustic version of Human, but quickly went to another song, Bling, before changing again to a cover of Joy Division’s Shadowplay and then finishing up with the remainder of Human.  This was followed by their super hit Somebody Told Me.

A couple of rare, or random, Killer songs including Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll, For Reasons Unknown and a Dustland Fairytale were thrown in to the set right before a very cool version of The King Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love.

Singer Flowers at one point recanted a story about throwing his favorite jacket out to the crowd in a concert they played in Las Vegas a few months back.  Thinking he saw the jacket on one of the fans in the Mohegan crown, Flowers pulled money out of his pocket and offered three hundred dollars for the jacket.  Only to realize it wasn’t actually his favorite jacket and promptly put the money back in his pocket.

The band finished up their set with Read My Mind, Runaways, All These Things That I’ve Done and Mr. Brightside.

After a few minutes, unnecessarily I might add, the band came back out for a two song encore that included Jenny Was A Friend of Mine and When You Were Young.

The Killers are a great live band with one of the best lead singers in the business.  They are always a great show live and with some luck we will get some new music out of them at some point in the near future.
