WESTFIELD – The Westfield Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is presenting an event for all parents on Thursday, March 2, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the South Middle School cafeteria. Christopher Rogers, administrator of student interventions for Westfield Schools, will speak on the subject of “Tiered Instruction.”
Rogers will be speaking about the Massachusetts tiered system of supports, and response to interventions (RTI), and how they are implemented in the Westfield Public Schools.
Rogers said that Tier 1 refers to core instruction for all students. Tier 2 is for students that are having difficulty or have not succeeded in the core instruction, and offers strategies designed to supplement, enhance and support the core instruction. Tier 3 interventions are for students who are not responding to Tier 2 supports, and need additional interventions.
Rogers said that all of the interventions are research-based. He said the district has student-study groups that look at students who aren’t making progress, and make recommendations. He also said interventions cover academic, behavioral and social-emotional difficulties.
“If your child has been put into interventions, here’s why, and here’s the purpose,” Rogers said about his talk on Thursday. He will also be available to answer questions from parents.
Michele Douglas, parent leader of SEPAC, said they will be looking to learn what supports, software, and coaching, in and outside of the classroom, are available for students in Westfield.
“This is open to all parents since this can affect any student beyond special education. I know it is hard to get away, but this is an important topic and child care and refreshments will be provided. We hope many parents will come over and network with other parents and administrators,” Douglas said.
