Tree removal granted

SOUTHWICK – Richard Solek was given permission from the Board of Selectmen this week to take down several trees on Granville Road.
Solek said the trees block his view when he tries to pull out of his driveway and he is concerned someone could get hurt.
“On weekends in the summer, 300 bikes come down the hill,” Solek said. “I can’t see because of the trees.’
Solek is worried he could hit a cyclist and has asked the Department of Public Works Director Randy Brown to add the trees to the list the town cuts down each year.
Brown said the problem is that the trees are healthy and the town has numerous unhealthy trees to cut each year.
“I can’t justify it in the budget,” said Brown. “If he is paying for it, I have no issue with them coming down.”
After the October 2011 storm, the town did remove three or four trees in that spot that were falling.
Solek said he would incur any costs associated with the removal of up to eight trees.
