NORTHAMPTON – The Westfield High School field hockey team’s drive for a championship hit a roadblock Friday.
Mary Boudreau scored two goals for sixth-seeded Westfield, which lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Northampton Blue Devils in the opening round of the Western Massachusetts Division I field hockey tournament.
The Bombers finish the season with a record of 8-7-2.
“I can’t be more proud of the Westfield High School field hockey team under the leadership of our 11 seniors,” Bombers’ coach Karen Gomez said.
Gomez said the team’s co-captains, Alex Affeldt and Jordan Swift, helped pave the way for a renaissance year.
“They played with intensity,” Gomez said, referring to the captains and the rest of the squad that followed up two losing seasons with a rebirth in 2012. I think they’ve learned a lot about themselves as a team and I can’t be more proud of them.”
Westfield goalie Karly Mastello finished with seven saves. Despite losing, she drew praise from her coach.
“Karly was fantastic in the goal cage,” Gomez said. “This is going to be a building block for us. …There’s only going to be good things to come for the Westfield program.”
Leanne Sullivan came off the bench to deliver a solid outing in her first varsity game for the Bombers.
