SOUTHWICK – DPW Director Randy Brown recently gave an update on the Veterans Street project noting that Caracas Construction, who was awarded the bid as the contractor, is expected to begin construction during the week of April 16.

In October, the Select Board signed a contract to award Caracas as they were the lowest bidder at $327,380.

The Veterans Street project consists of installing a new drainage system, water line, and widening the road. Brown has noted that widening the road is crucial because there is an inability to have two vehicles travel on Veterans Street safely.

With the current water line on the street being only one and a half inches in diameter, the new water line will be six inches.

The Veterans Street project was possible due to a Community Development Block Grant from the Baker-Polito Administration in August of 2016. The administration awarded $28 million in grants to 57 cities and towns across the Commonwealth.

The town of Southwick received $479,000 of funding for the project. Brown added that construction for the project is expected to finish by the middle of the summer.
