RUSSELL—A Wales, MA man faces multiple charges after reportedly running from police and hiding in someone else’s apartment.
Edward A. Arnold, 50, was arrested by Russell State Police in the early morning hours of July 4 after he reportedly pushed and threatened a female roommate with whom he lived for the past four months, then allegedly took off from police and resisted arrest after being found hiding in an apartment.
Police and court records said that Arnold was drinking beer and the alleged female victim took the alcohol away. She told police that this reportedly prompted Arnold to push her and threaten her. The victim reportedly texted another person, and that person then called police.
When police arrived, they reported that Arnold was in the backyard of the residence and was walking toward a nearby apartment complex, drinking a two-liter bottle of Pepsi. Police reportedly approached Arnold and he walked away from them. They asked the man for his name and he replied, “Tom Jenkins.” Police continued to follow the man and asked him to stop. Police reported that Arnold then stopped, turned around and ran away from police.
Two police officers chased Arnold but reported that they lost sight of him initially. According to the report though, one of the officers witnessed the suspect allegedly go into an apartment. Police reported that they found a door partially ajar, as well as a two-liter bottle of Pepsi outside of it, so they proceeded to enter the apartment.
The resident there was reportedly startled by the police and denied any knowledge of anyone entering his home. Police also reported that the resident appeared to be sleeping shortly before they entered.
Police then reported that when the resident looked into a dark corner of his kitchen, he saw Arnold. The police report said that the resident then yelled, “Dude, what the (expletive) are you doing in my house! Why are you in my house? Oh my God, there’s a guy in our house!”
Police reportedly approached Arnold in the apartment and guided Arnold out onto a porch. While police were bringing him to the ground, the police report alleges that Arnold began to resist the police. Police reportedly deployed a taser but did not shock Arnold. After a brief struggle, police were able to arrest Arnold.
Arnold was arraigned in Westfield District Court on charges of assault and battery, breaking and entering into a building at night time for a felony, two counts of intimidating a witness and resisting arrest. He was held in lieu of $1,000 cash bail pending an Aug. 4 hearing.
