WORCESTER – The Westfield Little League Softball Senior All Stars have one goal right now – to chalk one up in the win column.
Westfield, which lost its opener to Maine 6-1 and suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat at the hands of the host team, Jesse Burkett, of Worcester, has two games remaining in the eastern regionals. The Whip City All Stars will play Connecticut, 3-0 in pool play, Tuesday at Rockwood Field at 1 p.m. They wrap up pool play Wednesday against 0-2 Rhode Island at Ty Cobb Field at 1.
Westfield is coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Jesse Burkett late Sunday night. The Whip City’s pitcher, Jen Moller, tossed a one-hitter, but fell short of victory to the host pitcher, who gave up two hits, struck out three batters, and yielded one walk.
Jesse Burkett scored the game’s only run, unearned, reaching on an error, advancing to third base via another error, and scoring on a passed ball.
Westfield nearly pulled off some seventh-inning magic.
In the seventh, Carolyn Dufraine singled and Karly Mastello reached on an error with no outs. Paige Templeton, who had the team’s only other hit, hit into a fielder’s choice. But Templeton stole second to put two runners in scoring position with one out. A fly out and strikeout ended the game.
Vic Camp provided solid defense for Westfield, making a diving catch at shortstop and throwing out a baserunner at first base for a first-inning double play. Camp was solid at the position all day, as was third baseman Madison Brockney, first baseman Mastello, and center fielder Dufraine, team manager Mark Reardon said.
