Westfield State University to Offer On-Campus SAT Summer Institute for High School Students
WESTFIELD, Mass., June 25, 2013 – Westfield State University, in partnership with Educational Testing Consultants, Inc. (ETC), will offer an on-campus SAT Summer Institute for high school students this summer from Monday, August 5th, through Thursday, August 8th, from 9 am to 3 pm.
The SAT Summer Institute involves 20 hours of classroom time, and students will also get access to online review sessions throughout September. Class sessions, led by experienced instructors, use real test questions to show just how these skills are tested on the SAT test. The SAT test preparation program covers all of the math and verbal skills needed for success on the SAT exam. Quantitative topics that will be discussed include techniques for picking numbers containing variables, approaches to complicated geometry problems that involve more than one figure, and tactics for translating difficult word problems into equations. Verbal topics that will be discussed include spotting correct idiomatic speech in sentence correction problems, recognizing key similarity and contrast indicators in sentence completion items, and knowing which parts of the passage to read for reading comprehension questions. Additionally, the classes will include general test preparation topics such as utilizing the process of elimination, mastering time management skills, minimizing test anxiety, and identifying common distractors.

Westfield State University to Offer Human Resource Certification Preparation Course
WESTFIELD – The Community Education Department at Westfield State University is offering a Human Resource Certification Preparation Program beginning September 12, 2013. This course is offered in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
An intensive 36-hour course, the Human Resource Certification Preparation Program is designed primarily for those seeking certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resource (SPHR). It is also an excellent program for those wanting to broaden their knowledge of human resources as part of their continuing professional development. The course relies on the SHRM Learning System which offers the most up-to-date HR content aligned with the HR Certification Institute body of knowledge. Program content is updated annually to reflect legislative changes and new HR developments. As a result, SHRM Learning System participants consistently beat the national pass rate on certification exams. The Learning System has helped more than 30,000 HR professionals earn their PHR or SPHR certification.
The instructor of this program, Karen Smith, SPHR, is currently Vice President of Human Resources at Square One. Karen received her BSBA with a specialization in Human Resources and Labor Relations from Ohio State University and was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from the Western New England University School of Law. She has been SPHR certified since 2002, and has taught SPHR classes for ten years. Karen effectively leverages her extensive background in HR consulting and training to provide a relevant and engaging classroom experience.
The total cost of this course is $1,200. Westfield State University to Offer Holocaust Program
Westfield –Echoes and Reflections, the leading provider of professional development and multimedia resources for today’s educator, will deliver a teacher-training program with Westfield State University’s CENTER for Teacher Education and Research on Saturday, November 9th from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm in the Horace Mann Center at the University.
At this Echoes and Reflections professional development program, experienced facilitators will model activities from the ten lessons in the Teacher’s Resource Guide. Participants will explore the medium of visual history testimony to see and hear firsthand accounts from survivors and other witnesses. Teachers will leave the program equipped with the tools they need to help today’s students study the Holocaust as a significant event in human history and define the role and responsibility of the individual to uphold the principles of a democracy.
Also included in this program will be an introduction to IWitness, the educational website developed by USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education.
Participants will be awarded 4 hours towards PDPs, and are charged only a registration fee of $30.
