Westfield State University co-production of ‘As Schools Match Wits’ earns national awards

WESTFIELD — Westfield State University, co-producer with WGBY of the long-running high school quiz show “As Schools Match Wits” (ASMW), has been honored with two awards for its 2019 Championship episode. It received a 2020 Bronze Telly Award in the category of Television Program: Miscellaneous and a Communication Award of Excellence from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts in the Film/Video Miscellaneous category.
“Winning these two awards is not only a great achievement for ‘As Schools Match Wits,’ but especially for the Westfield State University student crew who work long hours in the University’s television studio to produce the show,” said Mark St. Jean, Westfield State video production coordinator. “They are the folks who operate the cameras, audio board, and online graphics, as well as floor direct and assist in editing the show. Working on a broadcast-quality television series is the best learning experience for anyone interested in a career in producing video programming.”
The show’s production team includes alumnus Eric Jones ’09, the director of creative operations for iHeart Media Group. “ ‘As Schools Match Wits’ gave me the experience, as a student, to increase my experience in technical, operational and production roles that I still use today,” said Jones.
Owned by New England Public Media, ASMW began in 1961 and is the second longest-running show of its kind in the nation. It is open to both public and private high schools throughout western New England. – Courtesy of Westfield State University
