Westfield takes win streak back to Whip City

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Senior All-Stars have had an up-and-down postseason thus far, but momentum is on the side of the boys from the Whip City as they advanced to the Section One winners’ bracket Tuesday night.
Because of their five-inning, 16-0 thumping at District Three champion Winchendon, Westfield next plays Thursday night at Westfield State University at 5:30 p.m. against the winner of the Auburn-Brookfield matchup. The winner of Thursday night’s affair will advance to Sunday’s sectional championship.
The champions from District Two have won two straight games, the second time during the 2015 postseason that they have won consecutive games. In their best-of-five series against Agawam to decide the district champion, Westfield won the first two games in the series, highlighted by a 6-3 road win in game one and a come-from-behind 6-5 walk-off win in game two.
Up 2-0, Westfield faced more adversity, dropping two straight to Agawam to tie the series at two game apiece. After Agawam won game three via a mercy rule, the two sides returned to Hampton Ponds and Agawam’s offensive outburst continued in a 17-2 thumping on June 30. Through the two games after Westfield’s quick start, Agawam bounced back by outscoring their opponent 27-2.
The Westfield offense did rebound in dramatic fashion during the fifth and final game Thursday, matching the hot Agawam offense inning for inning, ultimately clinching the series with a 15-13 victory in a six-inning thriller which was ended due to darkness.
