WESTFIELD – On Wednesday, members from the Westfield High School JV & Varsity field hockey teams hosted a mini clinic for the Westfield Parks & Recreation Warrior Field Hockey program. Westfield High School was host to the 7/8th grade Senior Westfield Warriors coached by Theresa Canuel and the 3/4/5 grade Junior Westfield Warriors coached by James Marcyoniak.
This was a tremendous opportunity for the Westfield High School field hockey girls to give back to their roots. Many of them started their career in the youth program prior to becoming a member of the high school team. The WHS field hockey team had the opportunity to work with the youth programs and be leaders and role models for the younger athletes striving to be like them. The high school team ran the Warriors through a series of fundamental drills followed by more advanced stick handling & shooting skills.
“As a high school coach it was nice to see the youth program striving,” Westfield athletic director Karen Gomez said. “I am grateful that the WPR offers this outstanding program to our youth and I thank the volunteer coaches for their dedication to the their athletes. It’s a wonderful feeder program for Westfield Field Hockey. It was a pleasure to watch WHS athletes have fun and teach our future. Supervising this clinic brought back memories of the first years that Westfield Parks & Rec introduced field hockey to Westfield. As a matter of fact, Senior Captain Jordan Swift was a participant in the first year park & rec sponsored field hockey in Westfield. Back then Swift was only a third grader attending her first field hockey clinic. Now Swift is this year’s leading scorer and has been the Bombers’ leading scorer for the past 3 seasons.” – Courtesy of Karen Gomez, WHS athletic director
