WHS hits trifecta

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School boys’ lacrosse team dominated at home against Monson, rolling 18-1 Monday to improve to 3-1 overall to begin the 2013 season. But they weren’t the only team from the Whip City to enjoy success as the Bombers also won in volleyball and baseball.
Kevin Papineau had 1 goal and 3 assists in boys’ lacrosse, and Ryan Wilson contributed 1 goal and 2 assists to lead the Bombers, who put together a 12-0 first-quarter lead.
Max Miller, Chris Pray, Sam Scarfo, Justin Halls, Evan Fontaine, and Matt Chlastawa scored two goals apiece for Westfield; Ben Geschwind had one goal and one assist; Anthony Sullivan, Nick Liberto, and Jeff Begoine each had a goal; and, Matt Lacroix delivered an assist.
Westfield goalie Sean Donofrio finished with four saves.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Westfield def. West Springfield, 25-21, 25-22, 27-25
Westfield’s Ian Wolski finished with 10 kills, 9 assists, and 2 blocks; Andy Jacques had 27 assists and 10 digs; Eric Shilyuk delivered 5 kills and 7 digs; and Ivan Zuez had 21 digs.
The Bombers stayed unbeaten at 3-0.

BASEBALL
Westfield 4, Cathedral 0
Westfield rebounded from a loss with a hand from Nate Barnes, who earned his second victory in as many starts. Barnes pitched six innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven at Forest Park Monday.
Connor Sas gave Barnes the lead with a two-run double in the second inning. Cam Robitaille doubled the lead in the sixth with a two-run double of his own.
Liam Flaherty closed out the seventh for the Bombers, who improved to 2-1.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD
Southwick 89, Holyoke Catholic 47
Jonathan Collins won three events to lead Southwick (2-0) – the triple jump (37-3), 400 meters (57.6), and 200 meters (25.0).
Other Rams’ winners included: Brandon Smith (javelin, 113-10), Colin Devine (110 hurdles, 19.4), Juan Fuentes (100 meters, 12.1), Matt Sitler (mile, 5:13), Matt Merchant (800 meters, 2:27.8), Chris Roy (2 mile, 11:37.4), and the 4×100 relay team (Fuentes, Nick Peterson, Mike Fleming, John Devine), which finished first in 48.4 seconds.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
St. Mary 4, Sci-Tech 1
St. Mary’s Jeanette Peretti finally overcame her opponent from Sci-Tech, Brianna Flahive, for the first time in three years. Peretti won the match at first singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Jessica Forest won at second singles for St. Mary; teammate Emily Wodell lost a tough three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; and, Casey Rutledge and Jessica Demers (7-6, (7-5), 6-2) and Shae Koharski and Ashley Forest (6-4, 6-3) won at first and second doubles, respectively.
It was the first win of the season for the Saints (1-1).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Monson 20, St. Mary 9
Two players scored four goals to lead Monson past St. Mary.
Saints’ Andrea Watson scored a team-high three goals, Lauren Chapdelaine and Bella Butler had two apiece, and Taylor Marshall and McKenzie Rogers chipped in one each.

JV BASEBALL
Southwick 14, Ware 2
Brian Mickalay yielded just two runs and one hit in five innings on the mound for Southwick. Nick Labodycz pitched well over the final two.
Labodycz also blasted a grand slam, and John Gonet hit a 3-run dinger.
