CHARLEMONT – The Westfield High School boys ski team may be down off the slopes, but the Bombers are definitely up in the standings.
Westfield claimed its highest finish in the North Division in six years, finishing first with a team total of 1:80.26 in Thursday night’s Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference race at Berkshire East. Longmeadow (1:49.03) and Mohawk (1:55.09) took the top two spots.
“It was phenomenal,” Westfield ski coach Monique Piotte said.
Neil Sheehan (5th North Division) was the first Westfield male skier to cross the finish line on the slalom. Sheehan placed in 36.62 seconds. He was followed by teammates Liam Sheehan (43.37), freshman Daniel O’Connor (48.23), and Liam Phair (52.04).
GIRLS’ RESULTS
Westfield senior Jenna Rothermel placed fourth overall (3rd North Division) with a time of 26.01 on the Giant Slalom. Rebecca Stephens (27.03), Allie Helliwell (30.66), and Hannah Giffune (31.36) were 2-3-4 for the Bombers.
Jillian Scherpa (Agawam) and Camille Berger (Longmeadow) were first and second, respectively.
Westfield was fourth as a team in 1:15.06. Longmeadow placed first in 1:09.71.
Notes: Every skier – varsity and junior varsity; male and female – placed on the slopes Thursday night. “We are strong, determined,” coach Piotte said. “We have a highly motivated group of (25) racers … that are up to the challenge. That is a sign of a lot of success to come.”
