MONSON – The Westfield High School swim and dive teams remain unbeaten after defeating host Monson on Wednesday.
The Westfield boys’ swim team did not start well, losing the 200 yard medley relay, and despite taking several firsts early in the meet, trailed after eight events. But the Bombers finished strong, winning the last five events decisively on their way to a 103-81 win.
Noteworthy performances came in the 200 yard freestyle (Tim Kwarcinski, first; Chris Tu, third), 200 yard individual medley (Matt Jacobson, first), 50 yard freestyle (John Dolan, first), 100 yard butterfly (Jim Stinehart, first; Matt LaBombard, second), the 500 yard freestyle (Jacobson, first; Roberto Morales, second), the 200 yard freestyle relay (LaBombard, Tu, Kwarcinski and Dolan, first), the 100 yard backstroke (Stinehart, first; Morales, third), the 100 yard breaststroke (Dolan, first; Patrick Monette, third) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Tu, LaBombard, Monette, and Stinehart, first).
The Westfield girls faced a thin Monson team, leading throughout the meet, winning 12 events and splitting the points in the 50 yard freestyle. The Bombers actually swept several of the individual events and one of the relays.
The 200 yard medley relay was won by the team of Kelsey Johnstone, Erin Lewis, Shaylyn Jurczyk, and Annie Goyette, followed closely by the team of Kate McCabe, Hannah Plourde, Lauren Longley and Emily Chrzanowsi taking second place less than a second later.
Westfield swept the 200 yard freestyle with Genna Senecal (first), Kelsey Johnstone (second) and Jurczyk (third), and the 200 yard individual medley with Hope Walsh (first), Jordan Jacobson (second), and Ali Johnstone (third).
Kelsey Veillette won the 1 meter diving for the Bombers with a season best score.
Westfield resumed their swimming domination, sweeping the 100 yard butterfly with Lewis (first), Hannah Plourde (second), and Walsh (third). The 100 yard freestyle saw a win by Kelsey Johnstone and second–place finish by Sarah Plourde. The Bombers swept the 500 yard freestyle with Longley (first), Jurczyk (second), and Samantha Dolan (third).
In a rare swimming occurrence, the Bombers swept the 200 yard freestyle relay with Sarah Lander, Hannah Plourde, Ari Fantakis and Kiesten Rosso (first), Hannah Ditto, Senecal, Dolan and Ali Johnstone (second), and Goyette, Lewis, Maura Berry and Walsh (third).
Only two relays can score and third place points went to the fastest Monson relay.
Westfield dominated the 100 yard backstroke with McCabe (first), Liz Gelinas (second) and Sarah Plourde (third). The last individual event was won by Bombers’ Ali Johnstone with teammate Jacobson second.
The 400 yard freestyle relay was won by Westfield’s Fantakis, Longley, Lander and Jurczyk, with fellow Bombers Ditto, Jacobson, Chrzanowski and Rosso taking second. – Linda Rowbotham contributed to this report
