Winifred E. McCarthy

NORFOLK, MA: Winifred E. McCarthy of 3 Briarwood Road, Norfolk, MA, formerly of Westfield, MA, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2016, at the age of 93. She was the beloved wife of David F. McCarthy who passed away in 1994. Born January 14, 1923, to Winifred B. and Francis Porter, she attended Westfield schools, graduating from Westfield High in 1940. She received a degree in liberal arts from Bradford College in1942. She was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Springfield, MA, as a claims adjuster, until her marriage in Nov. 1949. The couple then moved to Battle Creek, MI, where her husband’s career with Stanley Home Products took them. Their 5 children were born during the 20 years they resided there. She volunteered for many church, school, and civic causes. In 1970, the family returned to New England where she has resided since. Winifred leaves four children: Michael McCarthy and his wife Mary Ellen of Belchertown, MA; Catherine and her husband Thomas Walczak of Norfolk, MA; John McCarthy and his wife Linda of Ware, MA; and Jean McCarthy of Webster, MA. Her son, Richard McCarthy, passed away in 1995. She leaves 6 grandchildren: Jason McCarthy and his wife Sara of Greenville, SC; Karen McCarthy of Ware, MA; Meghan and her husband Scott Overgaard, of Chicopee, MA; Timothy McCarthy of Hyannis, MA; Thomas Walczak of Somerville, MA; and William Walczak of Franklin, MA. She also leaves 2 great-grandchildren: Madalyn McCarthy; and Abigail Overgaard. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Firtion Adams Funeral Home, Westfield, MA. On Tuesday, March 8, 2016, a visiting hour will be held from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at the funeral home, followed by a Memorial Mass at St. Mary’s Church, Westfield, MA, at 10:30 am and burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Richard McCarthy Memorial Basketball League, West Springfield Park and Rec. Dept., 26 Central St., Suite 19, West Springfield, MA 01089. Checks should be made out to the Town of W. Springfield with the memo line:  Richard McCarthy Memorial League.
