WESTFIELD – The Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) will be hosting a free workshop, “Basic Rights in Special Education” this Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 in the Westfield Technical Academy Cafeteria.
The workshop, led by Nancy Stewart on behalf of the Federation for Children with Special Needs (fcsn.org), will provide an introduction to the complex special education laws and procedures. Topics to be covered will include the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and laws specific to Massachusetts; evaluations and referrals, the Team Meeting, Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 plans; progress, transition, important timeliness and strategies for success.
“This is a good workshop for any parent who wants to learn their rights in the special education process. It is also a good review for those who have been advocating for their children over the years,” said SEPAC parent volunteer Michele Douglas.
Childcare and refreshments will be provided at the meeting.
SEPAC, which describes itself as an organization which supports parents with special needs children, may be contacted with questions or for further information at [email protected].
