WHS falls in slugfest

Westfield softball at Agawam 1AGAWAM – The Westfield and Agawam high school softball teams combined for 32 hits on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at the AHS athletic complex, but the Brownies’ offense scored in every inning to defeat the Bombers, 13-3.
Westfield (5-14, 1-6 Valley League) recorded 10 of their 12 hits and scored all three runs after the fourth inning, led by a pair of hits each from Karly Mastello and Madison Brockney. Mastello opened the sixth inning by smacking a home run to right field, barely beating the relay for the Bombers’ second run.
Westfield softball at Agawam 2The visitors recorded their second run of the inning two batters later, when Samantha Schieppe flared a RBI double to plate Brockney, who reached on a single after pinch-hitting for Brittany Kowalski.
Westfield scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning, when Rachel Swords singled to open the inning. After advancing to third base on a single and a sacrifice bunt, Swords crossed the plate on one of three wild pitches from Agawam starter Allison Wheeler.
In total, eight Bombers earned a hit, while four Bomber hitters – Mastello, Brockney, Hayley Moniz and Casey Almeida – picked up multiple hits to spread out the WHS attack.
Moniz received the loss on the mound for Westfield, pitching six innings and striking out three Brownie batters, while giving up 13 runs to a potent Agawam offense.
Westfield softball at AgawamThe homestanding Brownies (12-4, 2-2 Valley League) scored runs in every inning, scoring at least two runs in each of their final four at-bats. Becca Uschmann smacked a three-run home run down the left-field line to put AHS up 5-0 in the third inning.
Taylor Marcotte followed by hitting a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning, while Maria Moccio hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase the Agawam lead. Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit for the hosts.
The Bombers return home Friday afternoon for a 4 p.m. game against first-place Minnechaug, while Agawam heads north for a Friday night matchup with Amherst at 7 p.m.
