HS Wrap-up: Falcons elude Bombers

WILBRAHAM – The Westfield High School softball team rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but fell just short on the road. The Bombers failed to escape Wilbraham with a victory as the Minnechaug Falcons swooped up a 5-4 win Wednesday.
Minnechaug put up four runs in the third inning, and tacked on an insurance run in the fifth.
Westfield pitcher Hayley Moniz scattered five hits, struck out seven batters and walked four. Moniz delivered at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Morgan Zabielski went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Westfield. Bombers’ Casey Almeida also had a hit and scored twice.

Seniors bid farewell
Smith Academy 18, Gateway 5 (5 inn.)

It was the final game for five Gateway seniors – Joanna Arkoette, Gabby Dame, Chelsea Edinger, Alivia Galipeau, and Kayla Priest – who closed out the regular season on the road. The Gators battled valiantly all season long, finishing 4-16.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Bombers top Saints
Westfield 5, St. Mary 0

Westfield’s Will Scott edged St. Mary’s Garrett Almeida in the most thrilling match of the afternoon. Scott won the third singles’ nailbiter, 6-7, (4-7), 6-4, 10-6.
Shayne Holloway (6-0, 6-1) and Colin Gilbert (6-2, 6-1) won at first and second singles, respectively, for Westfield. Bombers’ doubles pairs (No. 1) Vinee Dane and Eric Unger, and, (No. 2) Joe Burzynski and Donald Kane both swept, 6-0, 6-0.
Westfield finishes the regular season 14-1 overall, 8-0 league.
“We had a great season,” Westfield co-coach Pete Morizio said. “We showed great sportsmanship today … We’re looking forward to the playoffs.”

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Spartans post shutout
East Longmeadow 5, Westfield 0

Westfield’s Natalie Mitchell and Gabby Rivera lost a hard-fought match to East Longmeadow’s Alex Wna and Haley Fole at first doubles, 4-6, 3-6.
At second doubles, Westfield’s Emma MacLeod and Camille Mkenzie dropped a tough one to Riley Poley and Amanda Drumheller, 5-7, 1-6.

Saints edged
Mount Everett 3, St. Mary 2

St. Mary’s Jessica Crosby won in straight sets at second singles, 7-6, 6-1. Saints’ Casey Rutledge was victorious at third singles, 6-3, 6-2.

BASEBALL
Bombers shut out Terriers
Westfield 8, West Springfield 0

Westfield pitcher Ryan Towle (5 Ks) tossed a two-hitter, and the Bombers posted a shutout on the road.
West Side broke up Towle’s no-hit bid with a base knock in the fifth inning.
Austin St. Pierre (double, run, RBI), Sean Murphy (2 runs, RBI), and Anthony Riga (2 RBIs) each went 2-for-4 for Westfield, which broke open the game with a six-run third inning.

Pirrello hits slam; Mitchell slams door
Southwick 6, Monson 1

Southwick’s Travis Pirrello smacked a grand slam, and Andrew Mitchell (3 Ks) slammed the door on Monson with a complete game three-hitter. Mitchell allowed one run (unearned). He also had a hit and walk at the plate with a run scored.
Dan McClellan had a triple and run, and Jake Goodreau went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Southwick finishes the regular season 16-4.

Butler, Masciadrelli, Hannoush lift Saints
St. Mary 1, Pioneer Valley Regional 0 (9 inn.)

Jake Butler (3-for-5) knocked in Matt Masciadrelli for the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift St. Mary on the road. Saints’ pitcher Matt Hannoush tossed a gem, scattering five hits over all nine innings, walking one, and striking out seven batters.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Butler, Watson net goals
Chicopee 15, St. Mary 2

Chicopee went on a 7-0 second-half run to pull away at Boardman Field.
Aisling Butler and Jillian Watson scored one goal apiece for St. Mary. Saints’ goalie Ana Kozinski finished with 13 saves.

Westfield vs. Granby (PPD.)
The game was postponed due to no officials. It will not be made up this season.

BOYS’ LACROSSE
Pacers blank Saints
Chicopee 14, St. Mary 0

Chicopee’s John Baker had six goals and two assists, and teammate Dan Vazquez assisted six times to overtake St. Mary at Boardman Field.
St. Mary goalies’ Padraig Smith and Devon Ugolik combined for 17 saves.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Saint Mary’s 4 Renaissance 1

St. Mary’s swept singles play, and Ashley Forest and Fiona Chen played a nearly flawless match at second doubles, 6-1, 6-0, to lift the Saints Tuesday.
At first singles, St. Mary’s Jessica Demers mixed up her shots and cruised to victory over Renaissance’s Nicole Schabot, 6-1, 6-0. Saints’ Casey Rutledge ran down lobs over her head, hit back shots over her shoulder with her back to the net, and won at second doubles, 6-2, 6-2. Jessica Crosby won by forfeit.
At first doubles, St. Mary’s Alexis Shedd and Brianna Rivera battled back from a 6-0 first-set loss to force a second set tie-breaker against Renaissance’s Bryanna Henry and Mahoro Shimiro before falling 0-6, 6-7.
