WESTFIELD – Jack Bauer has nothing on the Whip City.
Beginning with Friday night’s Division 1 boys’ volleyball state semifinal, the next 24 hours figures to be a thrilling adventure.
On Friday, the two-time defending Western Massachusetts champion Westfield Bombers (18-3) will take on the 2016 southern champ, Needham (21-2), at Wellesley High School at 7:30 p.m.

Then, on Saturday, the Whip City’s attention will shift to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst where the city’s top baseball and softball teams will vie for Western Mass titles of their own in what figures to be a pulse-pounding double header.

“Having three teams in Western Mass championship games this week has been very exciting,” Westfield High athletic director Eileen Flaherty said. “We have one championship title already for boys’ volleyball, and we are looking forward to their state semifinal (Friday) night. I would love to see our softball and baseball teams experience the same success on Saturday.”
A total of eight teams from Westfield and Westfield Technical Academy qualified for the postseason. Several track and field athletes competed at the state level. Bombers’ senior track athlete Morgan Sanders hopes to keep that flame alive this weekend at the New England Track and Field Championships.
“We are having a great spring season,” Flaherty said. “I couldn’t be happier for our coaches and students.”
