WESTFIELD – Edward Brzys passed away peacefully on June 7th, 2026. Born in Westfield on December 14th, 1931, he was the son of the late Frank and Victoria (Noga) Brzys. Edward was predeceased by his brothers Joseph and John Brzys, and his sisters Sophie Yaracz, Victoria Bruno, Katherine Ladue, Helen Soditis and Jennie Kowalczyk. The youngest of eight children, Edward learned from a young age how to be a giver; he was reliable, devoted to his family, and quick to learn and offer help to others.
A graduate of Westfield Vocational High School in 1948, Edward entered the Navy Air Corps in 1951, serving through 1955. After working in a variety of jobs around Westfield, he tested for and began his longtime employment with the U.S. Postal Service in Westfield until his retirement in April of 1995. Many locals remember Edward for his genuine kindness and good-natured humor while serving the community.
Edward was married to his sweetheart and dear wife Helen Catherine Brzys for 67 years until her death in November 2023. He is survived by his two daughters who he adored; Nancy Brzys of Westfield, MA and Sally Brzys Hietanen and her husband Paul, of Fairfax Station, VA; he also leaves behind his two beloved grandchildren Nicholas and Claire.
In retirement, Edward and Helen enjoyed lots of laughs, countless scoops of ice cream, and visits with neighbors and friends. They made many trips each year to Virginia to celebrate special occasions and holidays with family. Both were also members of the YMCA for years where they kept in shape and mingled. Edward was well regarded at his church, serving the St. Joseph’s congregation in several positions over the years.
Alongside his wife, Edward took pride in and enjoyed maintaining a beautiful yard and home; every touch, every craft, and every project was intentional and completed with a delicate, skilled, and careful hand. Edward was a true gentleman; his love for others shone through his actions and gentle demeanor; he was one of the kindest souls one could have the pleasure of meeting in their lifetime. Edward was an admired and patient husband, father, dziadziu, son, brother, friend, and teacher who imparted much of his wisdom and all of his love onto those who crossed his path. He will be forever missed and always loved.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 15th, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 73 Main Street, Westfield, MA followed by burial in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
