WESTFIELD – Longmeadow handed the Westfield American 10-11-Year-Old All-Stars a narrow defeat, escaping the Whip City with a slim 3-2 win in Wednesday night’s district tournament game at Cross Street Field.
It was the first loss of the postseason for Westfield American’s 11-Year-Old team. They fell to 2-1.
Longmeadow led 2-0 early before Westfield knotted the game 2-all in the fourth, and scored the go-ahead run late. The Whip City’s all-star squad was thrown out attempting to score the tying run on the game’s final play in the sixth.
Westfield’s Derek O’Day had a big run-scoring hit, and Alex Lacourse delivered a key base hit to right field that nearly extended the game late.
Troy Hevey was the tough-luck pitcher, tossing five complete innings. Hevey struck out seven batters, walked one, and allowed just one earned run.
Longmeadow improved to 2-1, setting up a sizzling finish to the tourney.

Northampton 14, Westfield 3 (5 inn.)
Northampton exploded for seven runs in the first inning and cruised to an 11-run, mercy-induced victory in 4 1-2 innings at Hampton Ponds Field Wednesday night.
Westfield bounced back in the top of the second inning, but fell short.
Tanner Beebe produced a solid inning on the mound for Westfield. Jaret Gillespie had a strong game at short.
Westfield fell to 0-3 in pool play.
