First-place Owls conquer Vikings

SALEM – Three Owls scored three goals apiece as Westfield State cruised to a 14-3 win over Salem State on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. Westfield State is now 12-4 and 5-1 in the MASCAC while the Vikings slide to 6-8, and 1-5 in conference.
Salem State honored their senior class in a ceremony before the game. Michelle Costa (Hull, Mass.),Amanda Nihan (Peabody, Mass.), Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.), Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.), andJenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) played in their final home game.
Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass.) – three goals, Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) – three goals, Roni Orcutt (Granville, Mass.) – three goals, Samantha Lungarini (Agawam, Mass.), Marissa Nimeskem (Hanover, Mass.), Alexa Tonelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass.) and Samatha Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) – one goal each; all contributed in the win for the Owls.
Riley, Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.), and Paige Giuliano (Braintree, Mass.) each scored a goal for the Vikings.
Westfield State opened up an 8-0 lead before halftime as Lambert scored three of the first four goals for the Owls. Tonelli and Testa each notched a goal in the final 3:01 to give Westfield State an eight-goal cushion at intermission.
Trailing 9-1 in the second, Woodin finally put Salem State on the scoreboard with her 18th goal of the season. Riley added another score for the Vikings before Testa’s back-to-back goals made the score 11-2. The Owls added three more goals before Giuliano added an unassisted score to make the final 14-3.
Mimi Khampaeng (Hampden, Mass.) earned the win making 10 stops for Westfield State. Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) made 15 saves in the loss. The Owls held a 38-18 advantage in shots and won 13-of-19 draw controls.
Salem State ends the regular season on Saturday, April 30 with a match against MCLA beginning at 1:00 PM. Westfield State will host Framingham State in their MASCAC finale on Saturday at 5:00 PM. – Story courtesy Salem State Sports Info
