WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School boys’ tennis team continues to churn out positive results, the latest being a 5-0 sweep of Turners Falls Friday.
“We showed good strength at all positions,” said Westfield coach John Morizio, whose Bombers improved to 5-1 (3-0 league).
Tristin Viale defeated Jimmy Vaughn in the top singles match of the day, 6-0, 6-1. Shayne Holloway and Lyle Libanan won at second and third singles, respectively, for Westfield.
Westfield’s first doubles pair, Jimmy Knapik and Jalen Bodendorf, topped Giovanni Ruggiano and Nick Morin, 6-3, 6-3; Bombers’ Colin Gilbert and Jake Perpetua downed Brian Porrier and Wil Turn at second doubles, 6-2, 6-2.
“We have a lot of match play, challenged matches, a lot of drill, and we work on all strokes – the serve, the volley, forehand, and backhand – and concentrate on double strategy as well,” said coach Morio, adding, “and footwork. And attitude is important too.”
The Bombers’ coach said his players have been showing excitement for the game, and bonded as a team.
“We work hard on showing commitment as a team, caring for one another, and consistently making efforts to do the right thing,” he said.
Westfield will look to extend its good fortune Monday at home against Sabis at 4 p.m.

Lachtara fans 14; Ensign lifts Rams
Southwick 3, McCann Tech 0
Southwick pitcher Emily Lachtara mowed down 14 batters via strikeout in a one-hitter, and Gillian Ensign delivered the key hit, a two-run triple for the Rams in a narrow shut out.
Tigers scorch Pioneers
Westfield Technical Academy 26, Pathfinder 14 (5 inn.)
Cheyenne Slack smacked a two-run triple in a blowout victory for Westfield Tech. Tigers’ pitchers Stephanie Allen (3 inn.) and Keisha DeJesus (2 inn.) split time on the mound.
Sam Melchionne (5 runs scored), Cheyenne Slack (5 runs), Stephanie Allen, and Mariah Brown (3 runs) collected two hits apiece.
Edinger homers in Gators’ loss
Lee 20, Gateway 6
Gateway’s Chelsea Edinger blasted a first-inning, three-run homer, and Audrey Gamble went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Edinger scored two runs and finished with four RBIs.
Lee opened with a big third inning, and blew open the game in the seventh.
Red Raiders top Bombers
Hampshire 5, Westfield 1
Hampshire scored three runs and the first inning, and Red Raiders’ pitcher Alexis Ferris (8 Ks) tossed a three-hitter in defeating visiting Westfield.
Grace Barnes, Samantha Schieppe, and Morgan Zabielski (run scored) delivered the lone hits for the Bombers.
BASEBALL
Saints put in extra work for win
St. Mary 4, Ware 3 (11 inn.)
St. Mary scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th to pull off a thriller at Westfield Middle School North.
Shaun Gezotis (3-for-4, double, walk, 2 runs), John Daley (3-for-4, walk, run, RBI), J Butler (2-for-5), Billy Lamirande (2-for-5, run), and Nate Bonini (2-for-5, double, RBI) led the offense.
Kyle Koloski tossed a two-hitter in 6.1 innings of work for St. Mary. Lamirande went 4.2 innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.
Bombers slip past Hurricanes
Westfield 5, Amherst 4 (9 inn.)
Westfield scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to get past Amherst.
Sean Murphy (3-for-4, run, RBI), Austin St. Pierre (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI), and J.D. Huntley (2-for-3, RBI) produced multi-hit efforts for Westfield.
Stefan Krol pitched 3.3 innings of relief, allowing just two hits, no runs, and striking out three.

Southwick delivered an offensive assault, and Joe Stratton (5 inn., 5 Ks) tossed a two-hitter for the Rams.

Andrew Daniels was a tough-luck loser, delivering a solid effort in defeat for Westfield Tech. The Tigers outhit Sci-Tech 6-to-4 but failed to get the runs across.

Cardinals halt Saints
Pope Francis 19, St. Mary 11
St. Mary’s Aisling Butler scored a game-high six goals. Jillian Watson notched a hat trick and one assist for the Saints at Spec Pond in Wilbraham.
Two players finished with four goals apiece for Pope Francis.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Falcons ground Bombers
Minnechaug 5, Westfield 0
Minnechaug grounded Westfield in a girls’ tennis match Friday. Westfield’s Natalie Mitchell and Gabby Rivera managed to give Minnechaug its toughest match, losing to Falcons’ pair, Christine Mayotte and Sara Salerno, 1-6, 2-6.
Crosby paces Saints
Greenfield 4, St. Mary 1
St. Mary’s Jessica Crosby won an impressive two-set match against Greenfield’s Alyssa Garvin at second singles, 6-2, 6-1. Crosby served up seven aces in the victory.
St. Mary’s Jessica Demers lost a hard-fought nail-biter against Jenna Silk at first singles, 4-6, 2-6, a match that featured spinning lobs, forceful backhands, and slashing forehands.
Demers consistently moved Silk back with steady accurate lobs. Silk responded with impressive groundstrokes.
Alexis Shee and Natasha Robarge played tough in the sole doubles’ match, but fell 0-6, 2-6.
JV BASEBALL
Southwick 14, Gateway 0
Sam Mizanoglu pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout for Gateway. Mizanoglu struck out 9 batters, walked four and allowed one hit.
