D1 track finals: Sanders tops again

WESTFIELD – It would not be championship season in the world of high school track and field without Westfield track star, senior Morgan Sanders.
Sanders claimed a gold medal in the 100 meter hurdles with a 15.26 second finish in the Central/West Division I girls’ track and field championships Saturday at Westfield State, eclipsing Westborough’s Melissa Sullivan (15.79). She also managed a sixth-place long jump (16 feet, 5 inches).

Westfield’s 4×800 relay team – Katrina Arona, Moira McDonald, Mia McDonald, and Taylor White – seized fourth in the 4×800 meter relay race (9:53.24). The Bombers’ 4×400 relay team – Mia McDonald, Sanders, McKenzie Chaban, and Arona – was ninth (4:18.30).
Katie Knapik tossed the javelin a distance of 100 feet, four inches for Westfield to take seventh in that event.
Sophia Gronbeck finished 12th in the 2-mile run (13:09.73) for Westfield, and Bombers’ Emily Ciccolo took 13th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:14.21), Chaban claimed 16th in the long jump (14-11.25), and Amanda Hall was 24th in the shot put (27-8).
Westfield totaled 20 points in the team rankings, tied with Chicopee Comprehensive and Doherty. Wachusett won the team competition with 92 points, beating out Algonquin (59 points) and Nashoba (57).
D2 NOTES: Southwick senior Ashley Consolini placed seventh on the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.40) and senior Emily McKinney placed 15th in the 800 meters (2:27).
BOYS’ RESULTS
As a team, Westfield failed to crack the top 10, but landed a 12th place overall team finish with 26 points. St. John’s (95 points), Northampton (53), and Nashoba (52) placed first, second, and third, resepectively. The Bombers also produced a couple of bright individual moments.
Westfield junior Gabriel Piepergerd soared to a pentathlon championship title with 2743 points. Brendan O’Donnell, of St. John’s was second (2666 points).
Piepergerd topped the entire field of pentathlon challengers in the long jump, high jump, and 1500 meter race, took fourth in the 110 meter hurdles, and was ninth in the shot put competition.
Junior Ryan Prenosil also had a nice outing for the Westfield boys’ track and field team. Prenosil placed third in the 800 meters (1:56.08), and combined efforts with Jeffrey McConkey, Eric Bone, and Sam Winiarski to propel the Bombers to silver in the 4×400 meter relay race with a second-place time of 3:26.21.
D2 NOTES: Southwick junior Brandon Castor had a silver medal finish in the 200 meter dash (22.80), a ninth place finish in the high jump (5-10), and finished sixth in the 100 meters (11.20). Rams’ junior Dermotheo Walden was ninth in the discus (128-3).

Lancers stun Bombers
Longmeadow 12, Westfield 11

Longmeadow’s top four hitters produced seven runs and nine RBIs to escape the Whip City with a stunning victory.
Maximilian Winkler (2-for-3, 2 runs), William Echeverria (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Maxwell Rye (1-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), and Samuel Schwartz (4-for-5, 1 run, 5 RBIs) tore the cover off the ball for Longmeadow.
Westfield’s Austin St. Pierre (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) and Zachary Jarvis (2-for-3, 3 runs, RBI) had multi-hit outings at the plate.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Belchertown 4, St. Mary 1
Garrett Almedia defeated Belchertown’s Noah Troy at third singles, 6-4, 4-6, (10-6) for St. Mary’s lone win of the day.
“All Saints’ players demonstrated great effort, improvement and sportsmanship,” said St. Mary coach George Hart, “especially seniors Will Armstrong, Zach Mastalerz – (he was) injured but still supportive, Sean Berube, and Garrett.”
