WESTFIELD – The Westfield State men’s soccer team captured a key 3-1 win over Framingham State on Saturday at Alumni Field, improving to 6-4-1 (2-1-1 MASCAC) on the year.
Marc Patnaude (North Andover/ North Andover) turned away nine Framingham shots and junior back, Kory McGilvray (Wilmington/ Wilmington) contributed two long distance assists to secure the MASCAC win.
Brodie Keene (Agawam/ Agawam) broke the scoreless tie in the 68th minute running down a 50 yard free kick from McGilvray. Keene snuck past the last Ram defender before heading the long pass over charging goalkeeper Corey Davidge (Blackstone/ BMR).
Eight minutes later, Legend Mu’min (Springfield/ Central) benefited from another McGilvray service from his own half. The long ball in was miss handled by the Framingham back row allowing a free run for Mu’min who calmly collected the ball in the box and slotted the open shot.
The Rams responded immediately, needing only 40 seconds to cut the deficit in half. An Owl hand ball in the penalty box allowed Jeff Braverman (Framingham/ Framingham) an opportunity from the spot which he converted just inside the right post.
Westfield’s Kieran Moriarty (West Springfield/ West Springfield) capped the scoring in the 80th minute when a failed clearance found his foot just outside the box. The one- touch blast provided all the insurance the Owls would need.
The Rams outshot the Owls 24-7, including a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
Both squads will host non-conference tilts on Wednesday, Oct. 12, the Owls take on Curry at 7:00 p.m. and the Rams face off against UMass Boston. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
