WESTFIELD – If the Whip City is in a state of shock Tuesday, it is for good reason. Two high school baseball teams from the City of Westfield – St. Mary and Westfield – were upset in dramatic fashion Monday.
Lancers stun Bombers
Longmeadow 3, Westfield 1
Timely hitting by the Longmeadow Lancers (4-5) erased a decent outing from Westfield pitcher Mason St. Pierre.
St. Pierre recorded eight strikeouts and scattered four hits – he walked two – in a 111-pitch outing that yielded three runs (two earned).

Will Echeverria went 2-for-4 to lead Longmeadow, Max Winkler (RBI) and Tyler Achatz collected one hit apiece, Justin Smith had a run and RBI, and Nolan Brown and Horowitz each scored a run.
Stefan Krol and Aidan Dunn both went 2-for-3 for Westfield (5-4). Bombers’ J.D. Huntley (RBI) and Sean Moorhouse (run) each had a hit.
Longmeadow jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of second-inning runs. Brown hit a soft grounder to the pitcher that was thrown away into center field, putting runners at the corners with one out. A fielder’s choice and infield single both resulted in runs.
Westfield cut the lead in half with a bases loaded walk in the bottom half of the third. Longmeadow tacked the run back on for insurance in the top of the seventh when the pitcher made an errant throw on a ground ball, resulting in the Lancers’ third run.
Indians upend Saints
Ware 9, St. Mary 1
Ware’s combined offensive effort from batters Travis Orszulak (double, walk, 2 RBIs), Alex Lanier (double, walk, 2 runs), Ivan Adams (hit, walk, 2 runs), Devin Slattery (hit, run), Ryan Murphy (run, walk), Logan Wojcik (run, walk), Jake Crevier (hit), Fernando Montalban (run); and effective delivery from Crevier (7 inn., 1 run, 4 hits, 2 Ks, 4 walks) produced a stunning upset of previously unbeaten St. Mary (8-1).
John Daley (2-for-3), Matt Masciadrelli (double, walk, run), and Quinn Powers (hit) had the lone hits for St. Mary.
Rams blank Gators
Southwick 15, Gateway 0 (6 inn.)
Southwick pitcher Bart Shea tossed a 3-hitter over five innings, striking out nine batters in the process.
Eddie Martinez (2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Nick Kavrakis (2 hits, triple, run, RBI), Shea (double, 2 runs, RBI), and Josh Lis (1-for-2, 2 walks, 2 RBIs) produced at the plate for the Rams.
Tigers claw victory
Westfield Technical Academy 4, Smith Voke 3
Cody Garwacki mowed down Smith batters for six innings, allowing two hits, recording nine strikeouts, and walking one. Andy Daniels earned a save.
Nick Clegg (2-for-2, double, 2 walks, run, 2 RBIs), Alex Sparks (double, run), Daniels (hit, 2 walks, run), Mike Durkee (hit), Brandon DeGray (hit), and Garwacki (hit) provided the offensive spark.
SOFTBALL
Lachtara tosses no-hitter
Southwick 14, Pope Francis 0
Southwick senior pitcher Emily Lachtara tossed a no-hitter on the road at Holyoke Community College. Lachtara struck out 11 batters and walked three.
Torri DellaGiustina went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, and Gillian Ensign (2 runs, 2 RBIs) homered for Southwick. Rams’ Brittany Penland (triple, 3 runs), Lachtara (double, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Molly Petit (double, run, 2 RBIs), Nikki Willey (run, RBI), and Allison Phelps (run, RBI) had two hits apiece.
Gators lose heartbreaker
Lee 8, Gateway 7
Dan Brittland led the Gateway hit attack with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and two RBIs. Gators’ Erica Wolfe went 2-for-4 and made two sensational rally killing throw-outs at third base all the way from center field
“We did pound out 15 hits,” Gateway coach Matt Bonenfant. “We just came up on the short end of the stick.”
Bombers down Red Raiders
Westfield 7, Hampshire 4
Westfield’s Lindsey Kiltonic went 3-for-3 with an RBI; Casey Almeida (run, 3 RBIs), Brittany Kowalski (2 runs), Elizabeth Irwin (RBI), Samantha Schieppe (run), and Hayley Moniz had two hits apiece; and, Autumn Moccia scored two runs.
Moniz recorded 10 strikeouts on the mound for the Bombers (5-4).

Taya Allen hit a two-run triple to lead Westfield Tech.

Rams topple Red Raiders

Nolan Labrecque (2 blocks, 2 kills, 1 ace), Nick Chambers (13 kills, 6 digs), Nolan Winch (7 kills, 4 digs), Kacper Kisala (4 kills, digs), Chris Baker (4 kills), Andrew Lachtara (28 assists, 2 aces), and Chance Tang (11 digs, 3 aces) delivered for Southwick.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Shedd, Leahy, Meyers shine
Pioneer Valley Christian 3, Saint Mary 2
Saint Mary continues to shuffle the player roster with the absence of its first and second singles players. Ashely Forest moved into the No. 1 spot, followed by Alexis Shedd at No. 2, and first-year player Erin Olearcek at the No. 3 position.
Shedd fought back against the fast forehand volleys of Pioneer Valley’s Dominique Jordaan to capture her first singles victory, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Pioneer Valley’s Sarah Emerson and Neriah Henry won a second set deciding tie-breaker to win 6-2, 6-7 again St. Mary’s Gina Mulvenna and Maura O’Neill.
St. Mary’s first-year players Caroline Leahy and Natalie Meyers captured a win in their debut tennis match, winning in straight sets over Pioneer Valley’s Christian’s Alexa Walker and Caitlyn Gibb, 6-4, 6-4.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Boyle battles
Greenfield 5, St. Mary 0
St. Mary’s top single player, Pat Boyle lost a hard-fought match at first singles, falling to Greenfield’s Fahrah Day, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1.
“(We are) still looking for (our) first team victory, but … making positive progress,” St. Mary coach George Hart said.

Nick Brandoli (3-for-3), Jack Fairlie (2-for-2), Zack Karetka (2-for-3) and Nick Ensign (2-for-2) scored two runs apiece for Southwick.
