CHARLEMONT – Three St. Mary High School boys skiers placed in the top 20 overall (and top 10 in the division) to help the Saints win the division for the second straight PVIAC race Tuesday night at Berkshire East to begin the 2019 season.
“It was another great night for our Saints,” St. Mary ski coach Andy Lussier said.
St. Mary junior Jack Masciadrelli finished second overall in 32.74, just behind East Longmeadow’s Cameron Ottoson (31.85).
“Jack put down a great run,” coach Lussier said. “Jack really charged the top of the course and skied the steep clean.”
St. Mary freshman Colin Freeman placed 11th overall (5th division) and Manny Umana Kimura finished 20th (9th division).
“Colin had a great run starting from the mid-pack,” coach Lussier said. “He really attacked the top section tonight and skied solid on the steep.”
Umana Kimura overcame some adversity.
“Manny had to hike and still managed to get into the top 10 in the division,” Lussier said. “This was some great skiing and and an even greater effort.”
There were other notable efforts from local skiers.
Gateway’s Zachary Ames skied to a fourth-place finish (34.03), Westfield’s Jacob Stephens placed sixth (35.15), and Southwick’s Aiden Mapel was 15th (39.08).
In the first race of the season, Masciadrelli and Mapel were 1-2 in the South Division.
GIRLS RESULTS
The girls competition was fairly close among the top finishers on the Giant Slalom with just two seconds separating the top 10.
Sophomore Chloe Lussier led St. Mary’s with a 10th place overall finish (3rd division) in 27.57. Frontier’s Coriann Delaney won the race in 25.56.
“Chloe skied a clean run and really charged out of the start,” coach Lussier said.
Lussier was the top South skier in Race #1.
Gateway’s Jessica Garriepy placed 16th (28.76), Westfield’s Emma Renaudette finished 21st (29.39), and Southwick’s Rebecca Drohen was 26th (30.65).
