NASHUA, N.H. – Westfield State sophomore goalkeeper Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) recorded her second-straight shutout as the Westfield State University field hockey team defeated Rivier 1-0 this afternoon in a non-conference contest at Joanne Merrill Field.
This marks the third straight win for the Owls, only allowing two goals in their last three games to bring them to 3-1 on the season.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the length of the contest, with the Owls holding the edge in shots (12-5) and corners (9-6).
Westfield broke the scoreless tie in the first quarter when sophomore Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) knocked home a pass from junior Abby Chernick (Longmeadow, Mass.) off a set corner play for an early 1-0 advantage.
Rivier had several chances to tie the game in the second half, but they were not able to get any shots by Goulet.
Raider sophomore goalkeeper Katie Olsen (Saugus, Mass.) shined bright in net for the raiders, stopping seven of the eight Westfield State shots on goal. Goulet stopped all five of the shots she faced on net to earn her second consecutive shutout.
Up next, the Owls will be in action at 4pm on Wednesday as they host Johnson & Wales University at Alumni Fiel. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
