WESTFIELD – Rhode Island College used a big second half to get past Westfield State, 86-72 in women’s basketball in the opening round of the Morin Memorial Tournament at Williams College last Friday night.
The Anchorwomen led 42-40 at the half, and tacked on 44 more points in the second half. Westfield shot just 29 percent (10-35) from the floor in the second half.
The Owls (3-2) will play in tomorrow’s consolation final against Endicott College at 1:00 p.m. The Gulls (1-2) fell to host Williams 65-49 in the other first round game. RIC (3-0) will face Williams (3-0) in the title game at 3:00 p.m.
Westfield forced 30 RIC turnovers, but the Owls surrendered 22 themselves.
Four players finished in double-figures for RIC, led by 19 points and 12 rebound from Sophia Guerrier, and 14 points and 13 rebounds from Fataya Larry.
Westfield was led by 19 points and five steals from Melissa Gray. Siobhan Moriarty added 14 for the Owls while shooting 6 of 17 from the floor, and senior point guard Chelsea Moussette added 10 points, six steals and four assists. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
