WARE – Southwick High School softball pitcher Sarah Hough shut down Ware’s attack, allowing no hits while striking out nine batters through four innings. Rams reliever Brielle Ensign delivered the big, early hit and then closed the door on the Indians.
The dynamic duo and their fellow Southwick mates chased the Indians 11-3 Monday at Ware High School to remain perfect this season. The Rams improved to 4-0.
“(I just thought) throw strikes, try to get them to hit it, see our defense work,” Hough said. “We definitely all contributed in a way. I don’t think we could have done it without each other.”
While Hough was unhittable, the Rams’ offense was indefensible.
Devan Fox got things started for Southwick in the top of the first inning, drawing a lead-off walk. Lena Michael singled. Hough followed with a RBI single. Both base runners advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, Ensign blasted a two-run triple to right field. Angelina Wyglarz hit a run-scoring base knock for a 4-0 advantage.
Southwick continued to add to its lead.
Michael hit a one-out single in the top of the second. Hough followed with a double. With two outs, Ensign walked. With the bases loaded, Wyglarz belted a one-run single to right field. The right fielder misplayed the ball, allowing another run to score.

Southwick kept its foot on the pedal, loading the bases. The Rams quick acceleration came to a skid though when they hit into an unfortunate 4-3-5 triple play. Ware second baseman Lilly Kibbe snared Michael’s line drive hit just a few feet from the first base bag, doubled up the base runner at first and tripled up the base runner at third.
This bit of misfortune proved just to be a blip on Southwick’s radar as the Rams added two more runs in the fourth. Hough doubled and scored on Ensign’s fielder’s choice. Isa Doe hit a RBI single to make it 8-0.
Southwick turned to its bullpen in the fifth inning and the results were nearly as effective. Ensign retired three of the four batters she faced, one by way of the strikeout. Kibbe reached on a one-out error, but Ensign forced two straight ground outs to end the inning. Ware scored an unearned run in the sixth. The Indians put up a bit more fight in the seventh, loading the bases before drawing a bases-loaded walk and scoring on a fielder’s choice before Ensign struck out two straight batters to end the game.
“Overall, (our goal) is just being a family and cheering each other on,” Ensign explained. “It just really helps everything and brings us all together.”

Westfield jumped a game above .500 with a win in its home opener. Vitaliy Samoylenko (15 kills, 2 aces), Nick Maslar (13 kills, 1 block), Cole Davignon (15 kills, 2 aces), Aiden Quarterley (34 assists, 2 blocks), Alex Robitaille (4 assists, 1 ace, 8 digs) and Mike Collins (4 kills, 2.5 blocks) paved the way for a Bombers victory.

Rylan Secovich (7 kills, 1 assist, 4 aces, 4 digs), Grayson Poole (1 kills, 17 assists, 2 aces, 5 digs), and Jace Turgeon (6 kills, 1 assist, 4 aces, 9 digs) helped Southwick improve to 4-0.

Durkee pitches no-hitter into eighth
Franklin Tech 6, Westfield Technical Academy 1 (8 inn.)
Westfield Technical Academy broke up Dacota Durkee’s no-hitter in the eighth inning. Durkee allowed just three hits, one earned run and five walks. He struck out 12 batters. Brody Zabielski gave up three unearned runs in an inning of relief.
Westfield Technical Academy’s Darin Towle went 3-for-4 at the plate. Deven Werbiskis was 1-for-4 with a RBI. Freshman Ayden Richter was 1-for-3 and scored the Tigers’ lone run.
Westfield Technical Academy (3-1) committed five errors.

Westfield won at first singles (Chance Koumentakos) 6-1, 6-1; second singles (Seth Bodendorf) 6-1, 6-4, and at third singles (Alex Dawicki) 6-0, 6-0. The Bombers also received forfeit wins at first and second doubles.

St. Mary’s (2-2) fourth quarter comeback fell just short. Mia Slack kept the game in reach for the Saints with 16 saves.
Katarzyna Wisnauckas had five goals and one assist for St. Mary’s. Saints’ Skylar Duda chipped in two goals and Summer Duda added one assist.
