MANSFIELD – The Westfield High School football team lost to Mansfield in its season opener Saturday, 49-15.
Mansfield had a pair of passing touchdowns, and an 88-yard TD jaunt in the third quarter. Westfield junior quarterback Jake Toomey ran for TDs of 40 yards (2nd quarter) and a 10 yards (3rd quarter). John Toomey added a 2-point run.
“I thought we moved the ball pretty well,” Westfield coach Bill Moore said. “We played a real good football team tonight.”
The Bombers (0-1) also had a pair of red zone trips end with a sack and interception.
“I thought our offensive line did well,” Moore said.
Moore said he was impressed by senior fullbacks Jack Templeton and Kyle Nutting who “ran very hard.”
“We just have to get better every day, every week,” Moore said.
Westfield will attempt to bounce back next Friday night when the Bombers travel to Amherst to take on the Hurricanes. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
