12:26 p.m.: accident, Holyoke Road, a caller reports he struck a tree which had fallen on the S curve of Holyoke Road with his car, the responding officer reports the motorist said that a tree fell into his path as he approached and although he was able to stop in time to avoid the largest part of the tree his car was trapped under the fallen tree, the officer reports the motorist happened to have a chain saw in his trunk which he used to extricate his car, the operator reported no injury, a DPW crew responded and the officer reports the tree was removed and the road was again passable at 2:02 a.m.;
12:55 a.m.: disturbance, Arnold Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a male party remove a traffic barrier from an alley and place it across Arnold Street to block traffic in both directions, the officer approached the man who said when he was asked that he moved the barrier as a joke, Jonathan D. Zuber, 24, of 86 Falley Drive, was arrested for disorderly conduct;
2:53 a.m.: breaking and entering, Powder Mill Village, 126 Union St., a caller reports an attempt was made to break into her apartment, the responding officer reports the caller said that she heard somebody at her door and investigated to find that the storm door had been broken in an apparent attempt to enter her residence;
8:22 a.m.: larceny, Westfield Vocational-Technical High School, a school resource officer reports a pupil informed him that his iPod valued at $434 was stolen from his backpack, the SRO reports the boy said that he and other pupils left their backpacks in the coach’s room which was locked while they went outside for physical education class, the boy said that he subsequently found the iPod missing and believes it must have been stolen by one of the other students who left his backpack in the locked office;
11:27 a.m.: city ordinance violation, Main Street at Free Street, a community policing officer reports he observed a female party cross Main Street without use of a crosswalk, a city ordinance violation citation was issued;
3:07 p.m.: animal complaint, West Silver Street, a caller reports taking custody of a stray dog, a responding animal control officer reports the dog was transported to the Westfield Animal Shelter;
3:17 p.m.: larceny, Falley Drive, a caller reports his wallet was stolen from his unlocked vehicle, the caller does not require a formal report but wants his loss documented;
3:24 p.m.: city ordinance violation, Main Street, a caller reports two men are attaching a political poster to a speed limit sign, the responding officer reports the poster was removed and the two men were advised of the pertinent city ordinances;
4:46 p.m.: vandalism, North Elm Street, a caller reports her garden was vandalized, the responding officer reports the caller said that part of a fence had been removed and damaged and her tomato plants were intentionally trampled;
5:45 p.m.: larceny, North Elm Street, a caller from a North Elm Street gas station reports a trucker pumped diesel fuel valued at $384 and left without making payment, the responding officer reports the caller said that the suspect came into the store and bought a few small items, the clerk said that he thought the man was a regular customer so he activated the pump but the man did not return to make payment;
6:37 p.m.: vandalism, Jefferson Street, a resident reported via the online incident reporting site that between 6-6:30 a.m. broken branches were strewn on her porch, the latticework under the porch was damaged and a dead squirrel was stuffed into her mailbox;
10:37 p.m.: assist other agency, Barnes Municipal Airport, a caller from a Federal Aviation Authority in Connecticut called to enquire about an aircraft which may have landed at Barnes airport, a supervisory officer reports he found that the aircraft in question had landed due to engine trouble;
11:06 p.m.: fire, Union Street, a caller reports smoke in the area, the responding firefighters reports illegal burning was found and the resident was required to extinguish his fire;
11:39 p.m.: liquor law violation, Church Street, a community policing officer reports he and two colleagues saw a number of college aged youths on Church Street and as they approached he saw one put down a bottle, the officer reports when he got closer he observed a water bottle containing a dark liquid, when the officer asked the youth what was in the bottle he replied that it contained rum, a city ordinance violation citation was filed;
11:52 p.m.: larceny, Mechanic Street, a caller reports she and her husband returned home to find it had been broken into and cash was stolen, the responding officer reports he complainant said that the woman had received cash at a baby shower and put the money away in her home, the woman reported that she and her husband had been away from the residence and returned to find the money missing, there were no signs of forcible entry, the complainant reported that a family member who knew where the money was kept is a suspect;
11:58 p.m.: liquor law violation, School Street, a community policing officer reports he observed a male party on School Street with a backpack, the officer asked the man his age and he initially said that he was 21 but admitted that he was actually 20 year-old when the officer started to check on him, the man said that he had encountered a city officer in the same situation previously and said that he had beer in his backpack, Darren J. O’Neil Jr., 20, of 127A King St., Hanover, was arrested for being a person younger than the legal drinking age in possession of liquor, a subsequent offense.
