BELCHERTOWN – The Belchertown High School varsity soccer program silenced the Whip City this weekend. The Orioles’ boys’ and girls’ teams both shut out Westfield 4-0 Saturday.
“We had a little bit of a different approach to today’s game – not that we weren’t trying to win it,” said Westfield boys’ head coach Gabe Crane.
“Westfield used players in different positions, and worked new formations and various strategies into the game plans.”
“It was kind of an interesting game for us,” said Crane, whose Bombers (1-4-6) need eight points over the final five games. A win is worth two points, a tie equals one. “We are getting ready for our final push with the league this week and next.”
“What we are looking to do is refocus all of our energies and put ourselves in position to do some damage.”
Westfield will get its first crack at a victory at home Monday against Agawam at 4 p.m.
“We know we’re capable of finishing strong,” the Bombers coach said. “We’re going to show people what we’re really made of.”
The independent game did not count toward the teams’ overall records.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Belchertown 4, Westfield 0
Jackie Soucia scored twice to lead Belchertown. Amelia Tooker finished with five saves for Westfield. Bombers’ Celina Nunez had nine.
BOYS’ JV SOCCER
Southwick 3, Holyoke 1
Jake Stathers, Declan O’Donnell, and Dan Lane scored one goal apiece to lead Southwick (7-2-1) in one of its most dominating games of the season. Ryan Todesco, Adam Lane, Riley O’Connor, Jack Lebo, and Dylan Buscemi all chipped in in the assist column.
A pair of Southwick shots also hit the post, and many were just outside the goal.
JV FIELD HOCKEY
Westfield 2, Longmeadow 1
Westfield (9-2) extended its undefeated win streak to six at home against their powerhouse rival Friday.
Freshman Leighanne Sullivan netted the first goal of the game at 16:19 in the first half off a Mackenzie Millikan assist. Millikan added a goal at 14:17 on a brilliant pass from Elizabeth Marcyoniak.
Westfield’s midfield of Madison Brockney, Cara Onyski, and Grace Silva silenced Longmeadow for much of the afternoon, holding the Lancers to just one goal.
Westfield goalie Jourdan Frisbee made nine saves, defender Rachel Gelina made a key defensive save in the second half, and Christina Onyski and Meg Parent played brilliantly on defense.
