WESTFIELD – The unbeaten Westfield High School girls’ track and field team remained atop the Valley Wheel League (3-0) with wins in a double dual meet Friday at Westfield State University. The Bombers defeated the Chicopee Pacers 77-59 and Cathedral 122-14.
Westfield’s Chrissy Seymour (long jump, 14-7 ½), Keri Paton (javelin, 103-6), Emily Andrews (100 hurdles, 18.16), Karly Diltz (100 meters, 13.54), Kayla Roskey (400 meters, 66.45), Kiany Roman (200 meters, 27.72), and the Bombers’ 4×400 relay team (4:49.86) – Emilia Lund, Amy Wardner, Ellie Dufraine, and Roskey – finished first against both opponents.
Westfield’s Amy Wardner won the 800 meters against Chicopee with a time of 2:47.70. In the meet against Cathedral, Jenna Rothermel (Bombers) won two events – the shot put (26-5 ½) and discus (88-7) – and Ashley Day (high jump, 4-10), Caleigh Rockwal (mile, 6:15.48), Lund (400 hurdles, personal best 1:25.64), and Elizabeth Marcyoniak (2 mile, 13:44.6) each placed first.
The Bombers’ 4×100 relay team took home the gold (versus the Panthers) with Rothermel, Nicole Chartier, Jaymie White, and Seymour combining for a winning time of 56.77.
Westfield enjoyed sweeps across the board in the long jump and 100 meters, and also took key third-place points to ensure a banner day.
“Bottom line is we’re still not fully strengthened yet we’re making headway with a small squad,” said Westfield coach Linda Rowbotham, whose team is missing key contributors due for various reasons. “When they’re all back, it’s going to be wonderful.”
“It’s pretty huge right now doing what we’re doing,” she said. “Everybody thinks you need a superstar, but we have a good smattering of people getting all of our points. We’re a very cohesive team – we’re truly a team.”
The Bombers all wore blue and gold ribbons to show their support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.
BOMBERS’ BOYS SPLIT: The Westfield boys’ track and field team split its double dual meet, trouncing Cathedral 114-21 and falling to Chicopee Comp 111-40 Friday at Westfield State University.
Ben Doiran won the mile (4:50), and Tim Dostie and Nick Jacques won the 2-mile and 400 meters, respectively for Westfield. Bombers’ Charlie Newman finished second in the 100 and 200 meters.
