WESTFIELD – The YMCA of Greater Westfield recently held its Swim Team end of the season banquet. This year saw the inception of the presentation of the “Bob Munns Sportmanship Award,” an award to be given annually to two deserving swimmers. The award was created in memory of Bob Munns, a long-time member of the YMCA and dedicated swim team volunteer who passed away in 2012.
Head Swim Coach, Jamie Bloom, reflected on the first time she met Munns.
“The moment I met Bobby, it was like I knew him all my life,” said Bloom. “We made a great connection from the start. He loved to talk about sports and kids and was full of life.”
Bob’s two daughters, Caitlin and Courtney were both Y swimmers. Caitlin attended Connecticut College and swam there for four years and became an All-American swimmer; the first Westfield Y All-American. Caitlin, who now lives and works in New York City, returned to Westfield to present this year’s award.
The 12-and-Under Award was given to 12-year old Madison Robitaille. The qualifications for the award require a special enthusiasm, passion and dedication for the sport of swimming, a willingness to work hard and lead by example, a positive attitude, a respectful relationship with the WAVE coaches, consistent attendance and genuine kindness and respect for one’s teammates, coaches and families.
The 13 and Up Award was given to 16-year old Erin Lewis. The qualifications for the award are: being a role model who demonstrates leadership qualities and sets an example for teammates inside and outside of the pool, dedication to the sport, an interest in helping the younger group swimmers develop, a respectful relationship with the WAVE coaches, consistent attendance, respectful and mindful of opponents, a positive and fun attitude and a sense of pride for the team and one’s town.
