Emergency Response and Crime Report

2:29 a.m.: accident, City View Road, a caller reports a rollover accident, the responding officer reports he found a pickup truck had crossed the roadway and rolled on to its side when it left the road, the officer found a cold malt liquor bottle in the vehicle but the operator was not found, the owner came to the scene and said that his son had taken the vehicle without permission and had called him to inform him of the crash, the officer spoke with the owner’s son at his residence and reports he was obviously highly intoxicated, criminal complaints for using a vehicle without authority, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor and motor vehicle charges were filed;
3:14 a.m.: larceny, Plantation Circle, a Southwick resident came to the station to report his laptop computer was stolen from his unlocked vehicle, the responding officer reports the complainant said that he had parked his vehicle while taking a walk on Plantation Circle and found when he returned to it that his computer was missing although his smartphone which had been in plain view in the vehicle was not disturbed;
8:59 a.m.: assist other agency, Westfield District Court, a caller requests service of a capias warrant, the responding officer reports the subject of the warrant was transported to the court without incident;
8:59 a.m.: animal complaint, Westfield Animal Shelter, 178 Apremont Way, a person came to the station to surrender a black male terrier mix dog;
9:45 a.m.: drill, Westfield Vocational-Technical High School, 33 Smith Avenue, officer reports conducting a code white drill to practice the planned response to an intruder in the school;
10:55 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Main Street at Casimir Street, an officer detailed to assist tree workers on Main Street reports he observed a westbound vehicle attempt to run another car into the opposing traffic lane and when he attempted to stop the offending vehicle the operator slowed but did not stop and forced the officer to jump out of the way to avoid injury, the officer reports he tapped on the hood and window of the pickup truck as it passed and yelled at the operator both then and as he pursued it on foot waving his arms, the officer reports he lost sight of the truck after it turned on to George Street, the operator was identified as the owner by his RMV photo and a criminal complaint was filed for charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon;
12:15 p.m.: officer wanted, Russell Road, a resident came to the station to complain of the care her children have been provided at a day care facility, the responding officer reports the woman detailed her complaints about the staff and management of the facility, the case was referred to the Detective Bureau;
12:53 p.m.: animal complaint, Airport Industrial Park Road, the animal control officer reports she took custody of a stray yellow Labrador retriever dog and transported it to the municipal animal shelter;
2:02 p.m.: disturbance Fairfield Avenue, a caller reports that a sub-contractor tried to assault him and he was obliged to subdue him when the man charged at him, the responding officer reports that the caller said that an argument about work arose between himself and the worker who eventually charged him, the officer reports the other party had left the area;
5:15 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Southwick Road, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle was found to be unregistered and it was towed;
5:15 p.m.: disturbance, Shaker Road, a caller reports an elderly neighbor asked him to call police, the responding officer reports the woman said that she had argued with her son who wanted $20 she was saving to pay for medications, she also said she is afraid of physical abuse, the officer reports he spoke with the woman’s son who said his mother has incipient dementia and is confused, the man denied that there had been an argument and explained that he wanted the $20 to pay for a pizza he ordered for their supper, the officer advised both parties of their protective order options and the man took his mother home, Highland Valley Elder Services was advised;
6:37 p.m.: assist citizen, Tannery Road, a resident came to the station to request an officer to assist as she gatherers property from a former residence, the responding officer reports the woman collected her belongings without incident;
7:38 p.m.: recreational vehicle complaint, South Meadow Road, an off duty officer a youth riding a motorized bike in the roadway without a helmet, the responding officer reports he advised youths that helmets are needed when operating scooters and they may not be operated in the road without a license, two youths pushed their scooters home;
9:04 p.m.: fireworks complaint, during about a one hour period officers responded to fireworks complaints on Phelps Avenue, Bates Road and Stone Path but were unable to conclusively identify any suspects immediately;
9:19 p.m.: fraud, Steiger Drive, a detective reports he assisted a resident and found that a call received earlier in the day had been an attempted scam and advised the resident to not send money to anybody.
