BUZZARDS BAY – Senior Dan Brady (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner 8:18 into overtime, to lead Westfield State to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening, Oct. 4, at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Brady provided the heroics for the visiting Owls (3-7, 1-2 MASCAC) after a scramble in front of the cage on the deciding tally, as he controlled an attempted clearing pass and blasted a shot from five yards out for his third marker of the season that enabled Westfield State to snap a six-match winless streak.
Brady had given the visitors an early 1-0 advantage when he scored off a corner from junior Dom Cavallini (Springfield, Mass.) just 12:07 into the contest. But the host Buccaneers (5-2-2, 1-1-1 MASCAC) evened matters less than 10 minutes later when sophomore Nick Parker (Plymouth, Mass.) converted a feed from junior Dillon Jones (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and lofted a shot in from 10 yards out for his third marker of the season.
Each team had chances to net the go-ahead score in the closing minutes of regulation, as Owl senior Kristian Driscoll (Lexington, Mass.) hit the post with five-plus minutes to play and sophomore Jack Fisher (Rehoboth, Mass.) was denied in the closing seconds. Both Parker and Jones had a pair of chances in front for Massachusetts Maritime, and an additional blast by Buccaneer senior Asa Mills (Westport, Mass.) sailed high with less than four minutes to go, setting the stage for Brady’s golden goal.
Junior Keith Hevey (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up his third win of the season in goal for Westfield State with a four-save effort, while freshman Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) made a pair of stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Buccaneers outshot the Owls by an 11-10 margin (5-4 on goal).
Massachusetts Maritime heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Westfield State travels to Newton, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to square off with Lasell in a non-league match beginning at 3:30 p.m.
