SOUTHWICK –Poise and perseverance proved to be the driving force behind the Southwick-Tolland Regional High School girls’ volleyball team’s most recent effort.
A combined team effort from several players helped Southwick rally back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Pioneer Valley Christian School, 25-14, 13-25, 6-25, 25-10, 15-8 late Friday.
Southwick received solid contributions from sophomore Taylor Keiderling (5 aces, 3 digs, 3 kills), senior captain Millan Andreoli (2 aces, 9 digs, 2 kills), sophomore libero Bri Bourassa (13 digs), and Hannah Sitler (9 kills, 1 ace).
Briana Porter (6 kills, 1 block, 3 aces) and Emily Jefson (2 kills, 4 aces) played well for PVCS.
GOLF
Westfield 249, Belchertown 261
BELCHERTOWN – Jeremy Doody shot an even-35 Friday at Cold Spring Country Club to lead Westfield (7-10).
“He played fantastic,” Westfield coach Chris Strycharz said of the Bombers’ senior golfer.
Nick Albano also played well for Westfield, which next plays at Cathedral Tuesday.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
McCann Tech 2, St. Mary 0
WESTFIELD – Alexia Andrews scored a pair of second-half goals – one in each of the 30th and 38th minutes – to lift McCann Tech late at Westfield Middle School North.
Pathfinder 4, Westfield Voc-Tech 1
Steffany Costa scored off a beautiful pass from Julia Levkha for Westfield Voc-Tech. Tigers’ Megan Illnicky finished with 18 saves.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Holyoke 2, Westfield 0
Holyoke tallied two goals to sink Westfield Friday at Roberts Field.
It was a tough loss for the Bombers, who also suffered an 8-3 defeat at the hands of East Longmeadow earlier in the week.
“(The loss) makes it a lot more difficult,” Westfield coach Gabe Crane said. “We have to do some winning to make tournament. We need to string together a bunch (of wins) and hope to make tournament.”
FIELD HOCKEY
Longmeadow 6, Westfield 0
WESTFIELD – Jillian Scyocurka recorded a hat trick, tallying the first two goals in the first half for a 2-0 lead, and adding another in the second half to lead Longmeadow.
Kelly Payne (2 saves) earned a shutout in goal for the Lancers.
