Owls capture MASCAC crown

FRAMINGHAM – The Westfield State University volleyball team secured the 2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 3-1 victory over the Framingham State University Rams on Saturday morning.
It was a match-up of MASCAC unbeaten teams for the regular season crown as both squads entered the game with a 5-0 mark in the conference. The Owls (17-14, 6-0 MASCAC) captured their sixth MASCAC resgular season championship in seven years to earn the top seed in next week’s MASCAC Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Owls will host the semifinals and finals next Saturday, November 9.
The Rams (23-6, 5-1 MASCAC) saw their 11-game MASCAC winning streak snapped by the Owls and will meet the winner of the 4/5 quarterfinal match in the other semifinal next Saturday.
The Owls took the first game 25-19, but the Rams answered easily taking the second 25-10. Westfield State regrouped and took the final two sets by identical scores 25-22 to secure the four-set victory and knock off the defending MASCAC champion Rams.
Westfield State received 14 kills and 20 digs from senior Julia Warner (Lee, Mass.) and 10 kills and 19 digs from classmate Lindsay Rescott (Northport, NY). Junior Carolyn Cote (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in with 37 set assists and four block assists, while senior Kayleigh Shea (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 16 digs.
