A Cool effort fires up Rams

SOUTHWICK – Paige Cool scored a goal with seven minutes remaining in the first half on a pass from Izzy Burns and notched another five minutes into the second half unassisted to lift No. 3 Southwick past No. 6 Wahconah 2-0 in a Western Massachusetts Division II girls’ soccer quarterfinal yesterday.
Rams’ Megan Zabik (5 saves) had a shutout in net.
Southwick moves on to face second-seeded Monson (17-0-2) in the semifinals.

DIVISION III
No. 6 Gateway 2, No. 3 McCann Tech 0
Kendall Rooney and Joanna Arkoette scored one goal apiece – both on assists from Jamie Pease – and Brooke Fairman (1 save) earned a shutout to lift Gateway.
The Gators move on to the semifinals to face Smith Academy, which shut out St. Mary.
No. 2 Smith Academy 6, No. 7 St. Mary 0
Smith Academy scored 38 seconds into the game, and had three goals in the game’s first eight minutes.
St. Mary played without two of its top scorers who were out due to do injury and illness.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
DIVISION II QUARTERFINAL
No. 2 Longmeadow 3, No. 7 Westfield 0
Longmeadow (16-3) swept Westfield (12-8) in three sets to advance to the semifinals. The Lancers will take on the third-seeded Agawam Brownies (14-6).

DIVISION III STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
St. Mary senior Noah Parker finished first for his team, tied for 29th overall at Redtail Golf Club on Monday. He shot an 88. Zach L. Brown shot a 94.
FCTS’ Troy Miller shot a 71 to top the competition.
