WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School field hockey team scored so many goals Friday that Athol may have had recurring nightmares of shots from the Bombers all weekend long.
Seven different players scored to lead Westfield to an 11-0 dismantling of Athol Friday at home. Lexi Minicucci recorded a hat trick-plus one (4 goals), and Gabbi Lunardini talled two goals.
Liz Marcyoniak, Minicucci, Ashlee Owen, and Paige Templeton put Westfield out front 4-0 in the first half. The Bombers tacked on seven more goals in the second half.
Liz Poteat and Monica Browne also scored for Westfield.
“Westfield picked things up after suffering two tough losses – to Minnechaug and Northampton to start the week,” Bombers coach Karen Gomez said. The Falcons and Blue Devils were winless prior to playing WHS.
“The team had an opportunity to share a story about ‘Pennies, Mental Toughness & Character,’ by head football coach Bill Moore,” Gomez said. “Westfield has put their pennies together and they are starting to add up.
Westfield goalies Karly Mastello and Jenna Rothermel earned a rather routine shutout in net with a combined zero saves. The Bombers’ defense was lights-out.
