SOUTHWICK – The Town and The American Inn for Retirement Living have come to terms on a payment plan to address $400,000 owed in back taxes.
The Southwick Select Board issued a statement Wednesday stating that “The American Inn facility has been and continues, to be an important part of the Town. It has a 30-year history of active residents contributing to the civic participation in our community.”
The release noted that during the fall 2011 storm the facility and staff gave aid to town officials when parts of the town were without power for up to a week.
Select Board Chair Russell Fox said the American Inn has a new management team in place that is working with the town to pay the $400,000 owed in property taxes.
“This is positive,” said Fox. “We were able to work out something with the new management team.”
Fox said with new managers and prospective new buyers, he believes the retirement community will prosper.
“These are Southwick residents and a Southwick business,” he said. “I believe they will revitalize it, and we want them to succeed.”
The American Inn, located at 1 Sawmill Park off College Highway, hosts annual public car and craft shows that provide entertainment for all town residents.
The community sits on a 50-acre campus that includes retirement cottages as well as a large facility with single apartments, assisted living apartments, a dining facility, fitness rooms and more. The American Inn offers healthcare on-site, transportation to appointments and shopping and daily recreational activities.
