WESTFIELD – Little League Softball went from an eight-town travel league to an in-town league pitting just two teams against each other in each of the 12U and 14U divisions for the 2020 season to COVID-related concerns.
That did not stop one local team from posting positive results in the win column.
OMG broke open a close game late to go on to a 13-5 win over Meyers Brothers in a Little League Softball 12U contest Wednesday night at Sadie Knox Field.
“It is good for the girls to be out there playing,” OMG coach Mike Bonfitto said.
OMG used four pitchers to slow down the potent Meyers Brothers attack.
Julia Bonfitto and Kaela Peich pitched two innings apiece while Emma Callan and closer Sydney LaPanne each tossed one.
“The pitchers threw strikes and had some good defense behind them,” coach Bonfitto explained. Katie Bouchard and Hazel Olsen both made nice catches in the outfield.
OMG put together a well-balanced attack.
Gianna Brewster, Jaylianie Santiago, LaPanne and Peich scored two runs apiece. Lily Clark, Emma Nelson, Bonfitto, Callan, and Katie Bouchard each also scored a run.
Bonfitto had a long double to pace the hitting.
Hayley Krupienski and Isabella Potenza pitched capably on the mound for Meyers Brothers. Ava Roberts had two hits, Caitlyn Arooth and Hayley Krupienski scored two runs apiece, and Sophie Svantesson had one run scored.
The two teams are in the midst of a 10-game season series with games scheduled for July 22, 26, and 29, August 5, 9, and 12 at Sadie Knox. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
