Asad drops 40 against WHS

WEST SPRINGFIELD – West Springfield senior guard Riyadh Asad scored 40 points in three quarters to single-handedly defeat the Westfield boys’ basketball team on Monday night.
“It was a special, special night for Riyadh,” Westfield coach Bill Daley said, following the team’s 76-59 loss to West Springfield. “It was unbelievable. It was as good a performance I’ve seen by a high school player in my coaching career. It was really impressive. He was hitting pull up 3s, he got to the lane. …He missed maybe two shots all night.”
Asad made six 3-pointers, all contested by Westfield’s defense.
“He’s a really good player, and he got on a roll,” Daley said of the Terrier’s top dog.
West Springfield gained control of the game in the second quarter, fueled by a 16-0 run.
Devin Wells (24 points) and Kyle Murphy (14) led Westfield (7-6), which returns to action Wednesday against top-ranked, unbeaten Putnam (13-0). Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
“We have to chalk (this) up, throw it away and get ready for Wednesday night,” Daley said. “It doesn’t get any easier.”
