Assault at intermediate school under investigation

WESTFIELD – An incident involving a student at Westfield Intermediate School last week is under investigation.

Westfield Police were called to the school at 350 Southampton Road May 13 just after noon. The caller reports a 12-year-old student assaulted a staff member with a dangerous weapon.

Later that day, a relative of that student posted on social media that the child was restrained by an adult, who is hired through a consultant and is not a Westfield Public Schools employee, and that the child’s arm was fractured in multiple places and required emergency surgery.

“I am aware of an unfortunate situation with a student and an outside consultant at Westfield Intermediate School last week,” said Schools Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski. “We are cooperating with the DA’s office and the Westfield Police Department who are investigating this situation. Due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation, I am unable to comment any further at this time.”

The Westfield News has submitted a request of records regarding the incident with the city.
