Friday, Aug. 17, 2012
4:32 a.m.: accident, Massachusetts Turnpike, State Police request an ambulance for a single vehicle crash at mile marker 37.5, see story in Monday’s edition of The Westfield News;
9:08 a.m.: larceny, Jefferson Street, a caller reports a computer was stolen from his home, the responding officer reports the victim said that the laptop computer and charger had been last seen about 5 a.m. but were found to be missing about 9 a.m., there were no signs of forcible entry;
11:46 a.m.: violation of a protective order, Hillside Road, a resident came to the station to report her father sent her about 5 text messages in violation of the “no contact” clause of a protective order, the officer reports the order was confirmed and a criminal complaint was filed;
1:58 p.m.: larceny, Meadow Street, a caller reports a package delivered to her residence was stolen, the responding officer reports the caller said that she had been expecting a package and when she called the post office to check on it she was informed that it had been delivered, the woman said that she also didn’t receive a package the post officer had recorded to have been delivered the day before, the woman said that she has arranged for future deliveries to require a signature from the person accepting delivery;
4:02 p.m.: vandalism, Orange Street, a resident came to the station to report her car was either vandalized or an attempt was made to steal it, the responding officer reports the caller said that the electronic number pad on the driver’s door was pulled out of the door;
4:23 p.m.: assist citizen, Pumpkin Lane, officers reports they escorted a male party to his former residence where he collected personal property without incident, the officers report the man will coordinate with the domestic violence advocate to arrange for pickup of other possessions at the residence;
6:20 p.m.: suspicious persons, East Main Street, an officer was dispatched in response to a complaint of persons panhandling at the Westfield Shops, the responding officer reports that two apparent panhandlers were found but background checks could not be immediately performed due to computer limitations, the men were sent on their ways and subsequently both men were found to be the subjects of two outstanding warrants, only one man was found in the ensuing search, Mark I. Komorowski, of no fixed address in Northampton, was arrested on two warrants;
7:01 p.m.: fire, Court Street, a caller reports two girls, about 14-years-old, are starting a bonfire in a field, the responding officer reports the fire was extinguished and the girls were returned to their parents where the relevant ordinances were reviewed;
8:58 p.m.: incapacitated person, Westfield Fairgrounds, Russellville Road, a patrol officer reports he was advised of an intoxicated man who was trying to instigate a fight, the officer reports attempts were made to persuade the man to leave and go home but the man exited a vehicle provided and insisted that he was going to walk home, the officer reports the man was deemed to be too intoxicated to safely walk to his Agawam home and he was placed in protective custody;

1:47 a.m.: disturbance, Elm Street, a patrol officer reports he was flagged down and two young men directed his attention to a third young man he saw who was being confronted by an older man who was yelling at him, the officer reports he saw the older man push the younger man to the ground and he took control of the aggressive man, Joseph I. Theriault, 45, of 11F Monroe St., was arrested for assault and battery and disorderly conduct;
2:33 a.m.: noise complaint, Elm Street, a caller reports youths in the street are creating excessive noise, the responding officer reports he found the group of youths to include one who had previously been provided an opportunity to go home, the young man appeared to be intoxicated, was loud and was not able to be cared for by his companions, the young man was placed in protective custody where he was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana, a city ordinance violation citation was issued;
8:40 a.m.: larceny, South Broad Street, a resident came to the station to report her purse was stolen, the responding officer reports the woman said that she went to sleep behind the Big Y supermarket about 10 p.m. and about 8 a.m. found that her purse and her backpack had been stolen;
1:25 p.m.: assist citizen, Elm Street, a traffic bureau officer reports he was able to locate the owner of a license found at a gas station the night before and returned it;
3:03 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Western Avenue at Highland Avenue, a traffic bureau officer reports he stopped a car pulling a trailer, the officer reports the trailer’s registration was expired, the operator was near her home, disconnected the trailer and pushed it into her driveway;
4:51 p.m.: assist citizen, Noble Hospital, a caller from the hospital reports a person in the parking lot is complaining that her child has been lost, the respond officer report the issue is a custody dispute, the officer found that a woman who has had custody of her recently deceased’s husband’s son has been confronted by her late husband’s adult daughter who is claiming custody of her brother, the boy said he wanted to live with his sister, the officer spoke with representatives of the Department of Children and Families and temporary custody was granted to the boy’s sister;
11:22 p.m.: fire, Franklin Avenue, a caller reports neighbors have a fire in a fire pit, the responding firefighters report the residents extinguished the fire;
11:33 p.m.: fire, Franklin Street, a caller who had reported an earlier backyard fire reports another in the area, the responding firefighters report the resident was advised of the complaint and extinguished the fire.
