Barbara E. (Sherwin) Carrington

Huntington – Barbara E. (Sherwin) Carrington (1932-2016) passed away, Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at the Renaissance Manor in Holyoke, MA with her loving family by her side.  Born in Ayer, MA on August 24, 1932, she was the daughter of the late James Sherwin, and Cecelia (Devens) Sherwin.  She lived in Huntington, MA for over 50 years, also Groton, MA and Fitchburg, MA before joining the Army.  She was a 1950 graduate from Fitchburg High School, Fitchburg, MA.  In 1950, she and her Aunt Jacqueline Devens joined the Army (WACS) and was a Korean War Veteran and served with the CIC Center in Dun Dalk, Maryland and at Hanua Signal Depot in Germany.

Barbara was the first and only woman member to join the VFW Post 6645 in Russell, MA where she was Chaplain for many years and Co-Captain of the Post Color Guard.  She organized the military funerals for deceased veterans from Post 6645.  She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary 6645, Marine Corp. League Auxiliary in Westfield, MA Korean War Veterans Association, Women’s Army Corp Veterans Association, and member of the U.S.S. General George Randall Association and Coordinator of the Russell Council on Aging.

Barbara was pre-deceased by her husband, Albert G. Carrington and her beloved daughter, Debra L. (Viock) Whitmore, her siblings James Sherwin, Betty Ricci, and Jacqueline Marvel.  She leaves four daughters, Karen (Viock) Willey (Steven) of Plattsburg, NY, Diane (Viock) Dunham (David) of Southwick, MA, Kelly (Viock) Cooley (Everett) of Russell, MA and Kim E. (Viock) Leigh (Jack) of Starke, FL as well as thirteen grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends, and her care givers Kim and Christian.

flagBarbara enjoyed the great outdoors, horseback riding, skiing, snowmobiling, flower gardens, camping, watching birds and feeding them.  She also enjoyed writing, social gatherings, traveling and vacations in FL and Hampton Beach.  She was an animal lover and took in many strays over the years who became her pets.  She leaves behind her pets, Cookie and Katie.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 22ndat 10:00 a.m. at the O’Brien Hilltown Funeral Home, 27 Russell Rd, Huntington, MAwith burial in Russell Cemetery.  Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 21st from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Donations may be made to the VFW, Post 6645, 384 Huntington Road, Russell, MA  01071.
