SOUTHWICK – Southwick-Tollad-Granville Regional High School (STGRHS) is helping students prepare for the SATs.
The School Committee approved offering an SAT prep course at the school for a nominal fee. STGRHS Principal Pamela Hunter said the $60 per student fee is much less than what other similar courses cost.
“Princeton Review is $300-$500 for the course,” she said. “Westfield used to charge $185 for less hours.”
Hunter said the course is approximately 18 hours and will take place at the high school twice a week.
“We will have two sessions – one math and one English,” Hunter said. “They will be taught by our staff.”
The committee unanimously approved the course. Hunter also updated the committee last night on the high school child study class. Previously, the class was run as the Sunny Days preschool program. This semester, Hunter said, will be different.
“It’s going to be a playgroup type experience,” said Hunter.
The group will take place Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. Monday’s class would be used as prep time and Friday would be for reflection, Hunter said.
The number of children would be limited to 10, ages 3-5.
“We will do some advertising for it, but I have already had some interest,” Hunter said.
Hunter proposed a $50 fee per child and said parents tend to be more committed when there is a cost.
“We do have some money in our budget for snacks,” she said.
Hunter said STGRHS has an agreement with Holyoke Community College, which does not give college credit for the child study class, but it would count in place of a prerequisite.
The board will formally vote on its support of the new program Feb. 5.
