WESTFIELD – The Central-Western Massachusetts Division II boys’ lacrosse tournament slipped into action, and despite the sloppy conditions, one local team soared into the next round with relative ease.
The second-seeded Westfield Bombers pounced on No. 15 Chicopee Comp for five goals in each of the first two quarters en route to a 17-2 victory in the opening round of tourney play Sunday in the Whip City.
Zach Gentle (assist), Anthony Sullivan (11, assist), and Max Maggipinto scored three goals apiece to lead Westfield (16-2) on a slippery field in between heavy rain showers. Bombers’ Matt Chlastawa had one goal and four assists, and Craig Ward and Jake Ackerman tallied two goals each.
“We took our shot at them early on,” Westfield coach Mark Cavalon said. “Overall, we played OK.”
Although the offense punched the back of the Colts’ net several times, Cavalon said he was more impressed with the play of his defensemen and midfielders, including Mitchell Weiss, Kane Miller, Aric Laplante, Pat Liptak, and Mario Metallo.
Westfield goalie Jake Cupak finished with four saves.
The Bombers advance to play the winner of No. 7 Westboro (11-5) /No. 10 Minnechaug (10-8) in the quarterfinals Thurs., June 4 at 5 p.m.
