Bombers steamroll competition

WEST SPRINGFIELD – There is no slowing down this runaway train.
The Westfield High School boys’ volleyball team steamrolled the Terriers 3-0 at West Springfield High School Friday night.
The Bombers won, 25-14, 25-18, 25-13 to remain unbeaten at 14-0.
“It was an efficient effort today from our hitters and great team serving with 11 total aces,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said.
Manny Golob (10 kills, 3 aces, 10 digs), Ryan Bucko (10 kills, 2 blocks), and Isaiah Headley (8 kills, 5 digs) dominated the net for Westfield. Bombers’ Eric Shilyuk contributed 24 assists and one ace, Dmitriy Doroshenko (25 digs), and Ruslan Kontsimal (3 aces, 5 digs) were instrumental in helping to key the win.
“We remained patient and took advantage of opportunities with timely kills and blocks,” coach Wingate said.
Westfield will put its win streak on the line when the Bombers travel to Chicopee Comp Tuesday to take on the defending Western Massachusetts champion Colts.
Westfield, which is seeking a season sweep against Comp, would win the North League title with a victory.
Game time is 6:30 p.m.

TRACK & FIELD – SPARTAN INVITATIONAL
The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams from Westfield, Southwick, and all throughout Western Massachusetts met in a fundraising event, the Spartan Invitational, Friday at East Longmeadow High School.
It was a great opportunity for some athletes to fine tune their times and distances with championship season just two weeks away.

BASEBALL
Bombers clip Falcons
Westfield 2, Minnechaug 1

Chris Sullivan (2-for-2) hit a solo home run in the first inning, and Sean Murphy knocked in the game-winner with a fly ball to lift Westfield past Minnechaug at Bullens Field Friday.
Crag Lacey pitched a solid game for Westfield, scattering four hits over seven complete innings. Lacey struck out six batters, and walked one.
Bombers’ Austin St. Pierre went 2-for-3, and Sean Moorhouse had a hit.

St. Mary 11, Gateway 10
Saints win slugfest

St. Mary won a game which saw all 21 runs scored over the course of the last three innings. Matthew Hannoush (run, walk), Ryan Gendron (2 runs), and John Daley (walk, 3 runs) had two hits apiece for the Saints.
Jayden Marge went 3-for-4 with a walk and run for Gateway.

SOFTBALL
Cooper breaks up Lachtara’s no-no
Southwick 18, Gateway 0 (5 inn.)

Gateway’s Jordan Cooper broke up Southwick ace Emily Lachtara’s no-hit bid with a base hit to left field in the fourth inning – the Gators’ lone hit – Friday in Huntington.
Lachtara finished with yet another shutout.
Alyssa Kelleher (3 RBIs), Sydney Rogers, Morgan Harriman, and Mackenzie Sullivan collected two hits apiece for Southwick.
“They hit the ball well,” Gateway coach Matt Bonenfant said of the Rams. “They’re just a very good team.”

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Viale, Rivera, Adamski victorious
South Hadley 3, Westfield 2

No. 2 Rory Viale won the lone singles match for Westfield Friday, defeating South Hadley’s Julia Gagne, 6-2, 6-0. Bombers’ double pair Gabby Rivera and Alison Adamski won at second doubles over Morgan Adams and Alisyn Rondeau, 6-2, 6-2.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Bombers burst through Hurricanes
Westfield 13, Amherst 9

Westfield outscored league foe Amherst 5-1 over the final 12 minutes to pull away with a victory Friday on the road.
Alisha Refee (4 goals, 1 assist), Rachel Gelina (2 goals, 3 assists), and Samantha Kane (3 goals, 1 assist) spearheaded the Bombers’ attack.

Chicopee 14, St. Mary 5
Pacers race past Saints

Chicopee took control of the game in the second half, scoring nine of the final 11 goals.
Lauren Chapdelaine led St. Mary with two goals and two assists, Jillian Watson had a goal and an assist, and Aisling Butler and Aynsley Davidson scored one goal apiece.
Saints’ goalie Carly Woodruff finished with 12 saves.

JV RESULTS
BASEBALL
Southwick 13, Hampshire 8

Josh Lis pitched three solid inning with two strikeouts, two hits allowed, and one walk for Southwick. Rams’ Sam Mizanoglu pitched the final four innings for the win with six strikeouts, one earned run, and two hits allowed.
Offensively, it was another strong game from Bart Shea (3-run homer), Tyler Orban (2 doubles), Lis and Dylan Parrow (2 hits apiece), Jack Fairlie (double), and Richie Alimberte (single).
